A new video from Bungie’s Developer Insights series dives deep into Marathon, showcasing all seven playable characters – their unique abilities and how to play them. For example, the Destroyer is a classic tank character, the Thief focuses on collecting loot, and the Assassin plays like a stealthy rogue. The video also gives a good look at the Triage, a support character who can revive teammates from afar and even multiply the effects of healing items.
The Rook is arguably the most engaging game mode. Like the Free Kits in ARC Raiders, you start with a fixed loadout and can’t bring extra items. You’ll scavenge for gear during the match, building up your arsenal without any initial risk. You can also disguise yourself as UESC forces – the AI enemies on the map – to blend in with them, making it harder for other players to spot you and avoiding unwanted attention, similar to how Scavs work in Escape from Tarkov.
Here’s the interesting part: Rooks appear in matches that are already happening and always play alone. Bungie wants to give players tough choices when they encounter a Rook. Will you help them out by giving them some of your gear, or will you attack them?
You get to decide what to do, but keep in mind that not everyone will be kind back. Still, this is a great way to strengthen your resources safely, offering a relaxing change of pace from missions and leveling up.
I’m really excited for Marathon! It’s coming out in March for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, and it’ll cost $39.99. Since there are so many different characters you can play as, they’re adding a ton of cosmetic items to unlock and customize them. You can find all the details about the cosmetics and the game itself here.
