During the summer of 2023, the public unexpectedly created the term “Barbenheimer” – a combination of the titles Barbie and Oppenheimer – and it quickly became a huge success. Neither Warner Bros. nor Universal Pictures anticipated this, especially since the two films seemed like complete opposites. However, this organic trend proved incredibly beneficial, boosting ticket sales for both movies and ultimately contributing to their success at the Oscars.
The huge success of pairing “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” (dubbed “Barbenheimer”) has inspired people to try and create similar double features with other movies. Some funny attempts included combining “Saw X” with “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (“Saw Patrol”) and “The Garfield Movie” with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (“Garfuriosa”). While neither of those pairings caught on like “Barbenheimer,” fans are always hoping for another fun combination. A new one is already developing this year with the planned simultaneous release of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Dune Part 3,” leading people to jokingly call it “Dunesday.”
Will Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 Really Open on the Same Day?
Last night, a special screening of Timothée Chalamet’s new film, Marty Supreme – which he also produced – took place. Following the movie, Robert Downey Jr. hosted a question-and-answer session with the cast and crew. While they mostly discussed the film itself, their acting techniques, and similarities in their careers, they also briefly mentioned their future projects. Downey highlighted their upcoming films, enthusiastically supporting what fans are already calling a highly anticipated pairing.
Robert Downey Jr. announced that his new movie and Timothée Chalamet’s Dune: Part Two are both releasing on December 18th. He jokingly suggested they call the date “Dunesday” and added that their friendship might be tested by the competing releases.
For the past few months, it’s been surprising to see both Avengers: Doomsday and Dune Part 3 refusing to move their release dates, which means these two big movies are competing with each other. Despite this, many fans—and even the cast—are actually looking forward to the potential “Dunesday” showdown.
It’s currently uncertain whether both movies will premiere on the same day, but as of now, neither seems willing to back down from the competition. Avengers: Doomsday has been ending its trailers with a countdown to December 18th, and IMAX has promoted Dune Part 3 as being filmed in their premium format. However, with eleven months still to go before release, either film could change its date. The big question is: will they?
