One of 2025’s Best Fantasy Movies is Finally Coming to Netflix

2025 was a fantastic year for fantasy! We saw huge successes like Netflix’s animated hit KPop Demon Hunters, the critically acclaimed Wicked: For Good, and the clever film Death of a Unicorn from A24. Now, one of the year’s best fantasy movies is arriving on Netflix in just a few weeks.

DreamWorks’ live-action “How to Train Your Dragon,” a major box office success from earlier this year, will be available to stream on Netflix starting February 10th, according to Whats-on-Netflix. Directed by Dean DeBlois, who also worked on the original 2010 animated film, the movie features Mason Thames as Hiccup, a clumsy 16-year-old Viking. Set on the harsh island of Berk, Hiccup challenges his people’s long-held beliefs when he becomes friends with a dragon named Toothless, who happens to have no teeth.

The Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon Was a Big Win for DreamWorks

Turning animated movies into live-action films is a challenging process, and many attempts fall short. However, How to Train Your Dragon was a surprising success. Critics gave it a “Certified Fresh” rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences overwhelmingly loved it, giving it a “Verified Hot” score of 97%. The film showed that live-action remakes can work if they stay true to the original animated story. It closely followed the original’s plot and scenes, with only minor adjustments to make the fantasy elements feel more realistic. According to Nicole Drum of ComicBook, it’s “exactly what a live-action remake of an animated film should be – respectful of the source material and enhances it without trying to change it.”

The live-action How to Train Your Dragon film was a huge hit with both critics and audiences, earning DreamWorks $636 million worldwide. This made it the eighth-highest-grossing movie of 2025, the second-highest-grossing live-action/animated hybrid ever, and the most successful film in the How to Train Your Dragon series. Because of its success, the franchise is continuing, with a live-action sequel already planned for release on June 11, 2027.

What’s New on Netflix?

With the live-action How to Train Your Dragon coming to Netflix next month, there’s still plenty to watch now! Throughout January, Netflix has added a variety of titles, including family favorites like Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2. You can also stream new seasons of Netflix originals like Dr. Seuss’s Red Fish, Blue Fish (Season 2) and Pokémon Horizons (Season 3). Other recent additions include District 9, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, and Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.
