The upcoming and presumably final installment of Ethan Hunt’s “Mission: Impossible” series, titled “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One“, is set to test viewers’ endurance in various ways. As per Paramount’s official announcement, this movie is already breaking records even before its release by boasting the franchise’s longest running time. The previous record holder was 2023’s “Dead Reckoning Part One“, which ran for 163 minutes. However, this year’s sequel outdoes it with a runtime of 169 minutes, equivalent to two hours and 49 minutes when expressed casually.

In each installment, Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise have sought to surpass their previous efforts in terms of action sequences and expansive global locations, which has frequently resulted in longer runtimes. The filming for the latest movie spanned over two years and took place in diverse spots such as the Arctic Circle, South Africa, various European capitals, and so on. With a franchise like Mission: Impossible , there’s an expectation that bigger is better – or at least that’s how Tom Cruise approaches his stuntwork – but there comes a point when it can become somewhat excessive.

Extended runtimes have become typical in event cinema, with films like “No Time to Die” (2 hours, 43 minutes), “John Wick: Chapter 4” (2 hours, 49 minutes), and “Oppenheimer” (3 hours) becoming the norm. However, the length of “Final Reckoning” (over 3 hours) underscores the franchise’s growth in scope since its initial 1996 release that lasted just 110 minutes. This expansion seems to reflect Tom Cruise’s enthusiasm for creating movies with elaborate action scenes. Given that this might be Ethan Hunt’s final outing, it could simply mean that he wouldn’t be able to surpass what is expected in the upcoming month.
