The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, brings audiences back to the world of Westeros, but it’s different from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Instead of focusing on powerful families, it tells a more intimate story about characters from the streets of Flea Bottom. This fresh approach is what the Game of Thrones universe needs, and while fans will naturally look for familiar connections, they will find them – several of the great houses still exist within the story of Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg. However, these houses have much smaller parts to play, or may not appear at all.
Since A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, we naturally see the major families of Westeros involved. While most of the important houses appear as expected, those who haven’t made an appearance in this new series might surprise viewers who aren’t familiar with the original stories.
7) House Targaryen

While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be different from House of the Dragon, it will still center around the Targaryen family. The story of Ser Duncan features several important Targaryens, which is fitting because Daeron II Targaryen is king at the start. His sons, Prince Baelor (also known as Baelor Breakspear) and Prince Maekar I, will both be featured—played by Bertie Carvel and Sam Spruell, respectively. Several of their sons will also appear, including Prince Aerion, who will be a key antagonist for Dunk and is played by Finn Bennett. So, Game of Thrones fans can look forward to seeing many characters with Targaryen blood, even though the dragons themselves are no longer around.
6) House Stark

The upcoming first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will feature the Targaryen family, but the Starks won’t play a major role, based on the source material. While the story in The Hedge Knight doesn’t involve the Starks, later stories reveal that Lord Beron Stark, who was Warden of the North, was dealing with a rebellion by the Ironborn. We might see glimpses of this conflict as the series progresses.
5) House Lannister

While House Lannister isn’t central to The Hedge Knight, Damon Lannister and his son, Tybolt, do appear. Damon, known as the Grey Lion, is the Lord of Casterly Rock during the story’s events. Both he and Tybolt compete in the tourney that begins the tale in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Beyond that, they don’t have a significant impact on the story—although it’s mentioned that Dunk’s teacher, Arlan of Pennytree, once defeated Damon in a joust, which doesn’t win Dunk any favors with the man.
4) House Baratheon

While House Baratheon often feels secondary to the Starks and Lannisters in Game of Thrones, it takes center stage in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This is largely due to Lyonel Baratheon, nicknamed the Laughing Knight, who is a key participant in the Ashford Meadow tourney in The Hedge Knight. He even helps Ser Duncan, making him a more memorable character than many of the supporting nobles from Westeros’s great houses. Daniel Ings plays him in the HBO series, giving the character a larger role than in George R.R. Martin’s original story. It’s welcome to finally have a Baratheon character viewers can genuinely support.
3) House Greyjoy

Like House Stark, House Greyjoy isn’t featured in The Hedge Knight and probably won’t be in the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The story briefly mentions Dagon Greyjoy as a source of trouble for Beron Stark, so he might show up in future seasons. However, viewers shouldn’t anticipate seeing any members of House Greyjoy—or their kraken symbol—in the show right now.
2) House Tyrell

House Tyrell, a prominent family in Game of Thrones, also makes a brief appearance in The Hedge Knight. Leo Tyrell, the Lord of Highgarden, participates in the Ashford Meadow tourney, which could mean we see him jousting in Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He has another short scene with Ser Duncan later on, but his role remains small. Actor Steve Wall portrays Lord Tyrell in the HBO series.
1) House Hightower

Alicent and Otto Hightower are central figures in House of the Dragon. Even though their family loses some power by the time Game of Thrones begins, they manage to survive the Targaryen civil war. This will be confirmed in the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will feature a Hightower participating in a jousting tournament. This aligns with the original stories, where Abelar Hightower is present at the tournament that Dunk attends, though he’s a minor character.
