Bandai Namco announced that Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown has now sold over 7 million copies globally. To celebrate this achievement, they’ve released special wallpapers. Kazutoki Kono, the game’s director and producer, also shared a thank you message to fans on social media for continuing to play. The game originally launched on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and is now also available on Nintendo Switch.
Celebrating its 7th anniversary, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown has sold over 7 million copies worldwide. According to Kono, the development team is thankful for the continued support and looks forward to seeing players in future installments.
It appears Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown reached one million sales within a year. Bandai Namco previously announced over six million copies sold in January 2025, suggesting this recent achievement brings the total sales for the entire Ace Combat series to over 22 million.
Bandai Namco recently revealed the next installment in the Ace Combat series, titled Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. The announcement was made at The Game Awards 2025, and the game is set in the familiar world of Strangereal in the year 2029.
Last month’s interview shared more information about the new game, revealing that development of Wings of Theve began in 2020. Producer Manabu Shimomoto explained the game will stay true to the core elements that define the series: the thrill of open-sky flight, the satisfaction of strategically taking down enemies, and the rewarding feeling of conquering obstacles. “We’ve maintained what fans have enjoyed for three decades while also considering what improvements they’d appreciate,” he stated.
Taking advantage of today’s powerful computers, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is utilizing cutting-edge technology. Developers are using a new, internally-built engine alongside Unreal Engine 5 to create realistic clouds in the game. This new engine, called Cloudly, is replacing a previous tool called truSky.
In Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, story sequences will use first-person perspectives, all rendered within the game engine itself. This allows players to notice more details in the environment and during conversations, making them feel more involved in the narrative. According to Kono, players can even discover hidden details by simply looking around during these scenes, like observing what other characters are doing in the background.
In Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, you’ll play as the pilot known as “Wings of Theve” and team up with the crew of the refugee ship, Endurance. This ship carries people who fled after an attack on the Federation of Central Usea. The game is planned for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S later this year, though a specific date hasn’t been announced yet.
We’ve added a reply with information about wallpaper sizes, which are available for download on our official website. Please feel free to use them! You can find links to the game on these platforms: PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam®.
