Boy Meets World Stars Blast One of the Sitcom’s Holiday Episodes, “It’s Just Terrible”

As a dedicated fan of ’90s sitcom “Boy Meets World“, I can attest that it holds a special place in my heart. It seems that nostalgia isn’t limited to me, as evidenced by the cast members themselves. Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle, who starred in the series, host a rewatch podcast named “Pod Meets World“, where they reminisce about the show’s influence and share behind-the-scenes stories. In their latest episode, they took a trip down memory lane to discuss Season 6’s episode “My Baby Valentine.” Despite cherishing their time on the series, they express a certain contempt for this specific episode due to some questionable creative choices they made looking back on it.

In this particular episode, the main character Cory (Ben Savage) is faced with two challenges: organizing a baby shower for his mom, Amy (Betsy Randle), and dealing with his partner Topanga (Fishel) who seems unenthusiastic about spending Valentine’s Day together. As Cory struggles to cope, he makes an unexpected decision by hiring a stripper for the baby shower, causing quite a bewilderment among the guests.

As a devoted fan, I have to express my thoughts about the “Boy Meets World” episode in question. To be honest, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me, and that’s coming from someone who loved Shawn, played by the talented Rider Strong. From where I stand, this particular installment seemed more like a jumble of ideas rather than a well-crafted storyline – disjointed and lacking the usual cohesion we’ve come to expect from this beloved series.

In simpler terms, Strong stated, “The storyline seemed to combine multiple unrelated plots, such as one focusing on Cory’s anxiety around Valentine’s Day, which later shifted to something else without much resolution. It felt more like a hasty compilation of separate episodes rather than a well-developed single narrative.

In the same vein, Friedle, who portrayed Cory’s brother Eric, added his critical perspective to the episode as well.

In my perspective, I found myself disliking Cory immensely, yet it seems that’s the general expectation. However, allow me to clarify, the Cory I encountered was a far cry from the ideal image people usually have of him. Frankly speaking, it was an unpleasant experience beyond description.

Moreover, Fishel notes that a more aggressive aspect of Cory surfaces later on, which was generally disliked by everyone.

Fishel stated that the portrayal of Cory in this episode was the absolute worst they’ve ever seen across all episodes, consistently. His actions towards Topanga, particularly when he gripped her shoulder, were so intense that Fishel’s voice reflects the strength used. The force exerted was significant enough to alter Fishel’s speech, causing changes in breath and tone, making it clear that this wasn’t a favorable representation of Cory.

It’s fascinating when a show known for its humor suddenly becomes more serious. Sometimes this shift can be effective, but other times, like this instance, it doesn’t quite hit the mark. In this episode, the change in tone seems to cast Cory in an unfavorable light, which leaves viewers puzzled, as the hosts suggest. Despite these shortcomings, it’s intriguing to revisit this episode from the perspective of those who experienced it firsthand.
