Even though Hytale is still in development, there’s already a lot to experience and discover. The game features a wide variety of animals, though you’ll find most of them roaming freely in the wild. You can also find and interact with different kinds of horses as you explore.
I’ve also discovered a reliable method for taming horses, and this guide will walk you through the process – even how to raise foals. Let’s get started and capture some wild horses!
How to Tame Horses
I’m really excited about Hytale, but since it’s still in early access, you can’t officially tame horses yet. Still, I’ve figured out a way to capture and keep them – they’re technically wild, but they’re mine! And I’ll even show you how to keep those adorable little foals safe too.
How To Keep Horses
Finding a horse in Hytale is simple: just explore the world! They roam freely, and you’ll likely encounter one fairly quickly – I found one after only about five minutes of searching.
Once you’re close enough, press the F key to get on the horse. Then you can ride it wherever you like.
Some important things to keep in mind:
- Don’t mount from the back – the horse will most likely kick you
- You can equip a carrot to make the horse less skittish but for some reason you can’t mount them until you spook them again.
Once you’ve finished riding, simply put the horse in a pen or safe space to keep it contained. This way, you’ll always have a horse ready to go whenever you feel like a ride.
But the horse is still wild – even in the enclosure. So, approach it like one or it will kick you!
How To Capture Foals (Baby Horses)
You’ll sometimes see young horses, called foals, in the wild, and you can’t ride them. Interestingly, it is possible to catch foals.
You’ll need to make a Capture Crate to do this. You can unlock the recipe for it by building and placing a Farmer’s Workbench.
The Capture Crate requires the following materials:
- Any Wood x4 – Obtained by chopping down any type of tree.
- Essence of Life x50 – Mainly obtained through harvesting crops, including the ones found randomly in the wild.

Once you’ve located the foal, simply walk up to it while holding the Capture Crate and click to capture it. After that, you can move the foal into a suitable enclosure.
As a player, I’ve noticed the young horses – the foals – don’t actually mature into full-grown horses yet. It seems like the developers are planning to add that feature in a future update, which I’m really excited about!
Conclusion
So, that covers everything about having horses in Hytale! Even though full horse taming isn’t available yet, you can still keep them at your base and ride them whenever you like. Hopefully, the developers will add more animal management features in the future!
