Fashion’s biggest night may also be its most elusive.
Each year, the exclusive Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit, commonly referred to as the Met Gala, is organized by Vogue‘s Anna Wintour and a changing team of co-chairs. Despite the attendance of numerous global celebrities, there are some unexpected stars who have yet to grace the steps of this renowned event for various reasons.
For instance, LeBron James, who has never been to the Met Gala, is planning to rectify that on May 5th. He will do so as a special co-chair, joining the event’s other co-chairs for the night: Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour.
Despite the fact that Zendaya is well-known for being a prominent fashion icon at the Gala, often even co-chairing events, her partner Tom Holland has never accompanied her on the red carpet on the first Monday in May. In an interview with Men’s Health in January, the Spider-Man star explained that he usually avoids walking the red carpet with Euphoria actress Zendaya because “it’s not my moment, it’s her moment, and if we go together, it becomes about us.
The list of those who didn’t attend isn’t limited to superheroes; it also encompasses your dearest Friends. In fact, despite their global recognition, the cast members from the NBC sitcom Friends, namely Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, and Courteney Cox, have yet to grace the Met Gala.
At the banquet, both Princess Diana and Princess Beatrice were present, while other members of the British royal family such as Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle chose not to make their traditional appearance on the Met steps.
Indeed, some notable figures with distinctive ties to the Met Gala haven’t made an appearance just yet.
Helena Bonham Carter, known for her role as Harry Potter alumna, surprisingly hasn’t walked the actual red carpet at any Met Gala event, despite playing a stylist in the movie Ocean’s 8 from 2018.
At the 2023 Met Gala, Wintour was accompanied by Oscar nominee Bill Nighy, but some people online mistook him for Bill Nye, the TV personality. This error, though, served as a reminder that Bill Nye has never graced the event.
These stars are merely some of the individuals who haven’t made an appearance at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s yearly Costume Institute Benefit yet. If you’re curious about other famous figures who might be surprised by their absence from the Met Gala, continue reading…
