Gary Oldman’s Oscar-winning Churchill drama Darkest Hour is airing on BBC tonight

Tonight, the television broadcast of the drama “Darkest Hour,” where Gary Oldman earned an Oscar for his depiction of Sir Winston Churchill during World War II, will be aired.

On Monday, 5th May, at 8 pm, BBC One will broadcast Joe Wright’s biographical movie, offering viewers an exceptional premiere to conclude their bank holiday weekend entertainment.

In 2017, the movie made its debut, not only earning Jack Oldman the mentioned award, but also being nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars held the following year.

In May 1940, it centers around the tense conflict within the war cabinet, where Winston Churchill and his colleagues grappled with the decision of either agreeing to a peace treaty with Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany or persisting in their battle for survival.

Besides Gary Oldman portraying Churchill, the cast also features Kristin Scott Thomas (from Slow Horses) as his wife Clementine Churchill, Lily James (known for The Iron Claw) as his secretary Elizabeth Layton, and Stephen Dillane (famous for Kaos) as Viscount Halifax.

Additionally, you might encounter Ben Mendelsohn from the series ‘Andor’, portraying King George VI, and Ronald Pickup, known for ‘Summer of Rockets’, taking on the role of Neville Chamberlain, a Conservative politician who held office before Churchill, in the same production.

In our first review, published when the movie premiered in theaters, we referred to it as a nearly flawless counterpart to Christopher Nolan’s concise and cryptic film, “Dunkirk.

The review noted that it was a compelling exploration of a political figure who has been excessively mythologized, presenting him less as a hero and more as a principled individual struggling against all odds to secure victory.

In our opinion, Oldman delivers an outstanding performance as he seems to identify with the character of the outsider. This role appears to bring out his best work in years, making Churchill’s challenging times particularly brilliant. What a remarkable performance indeed!
