In his illustrious career, Denzel Washington’s sole franchise, “The Equalizer,” gets a second chance on a different streaming service. The gruesome action movie, “The Equalizer 2,” makes a powerful entrance soon after becoming available on the widely-used platform.
Through a recent update, “The Equalizer 2” has climbed up Netflix’s top 10 movies list to take third place. Since its debut on the streaming platform over the weekend, it has given Tom Hardy’s new action film, “Havoc,” a run for its money. This is the second time this year that “The Equalizer 2” has enjoyed immediate success in the streaming world.
In 2018, the movie “The Equalizer 2” came out, with Denzel Washington returning as Robert McCall, a former Marine Corps veteran and DIA officer. In this film, McCall is seeking revenge for the death of his friend, resorting to violent actions while working as a Lyft driver. Notably, Washington’s co-star from “Gladiator II,” whose character is Dave York, a freelance assassin and former CIA operative, appears in the movie. Additionally, Bill Pullman and Ashton Sanders from “Judas and the Black Messiah” make appearances in this sequel.
Under Antoine Fuqua’s direction, Washington delivered an Academy Award-winning performance in Training Day, and his role in The Equalizer 2 drew mixed reactions from critics (52% on Rotten Tomatoes). Despite this, the film produced by Sony Pictures managed to generate a substantial income of $190.4 million worldwide, surpassing its production budget of $79 million. This has led to the movie developing a devoted fan base.
After the debut of “The Equalizer 3” in 2023, the action series titled “The Equalizer” achieved its peak success critically, garnering a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning slightly over $191.1 million globally. The third movie, featuring Washington’s co-star from “Man on Fire”, was initially believed to be Washington’s final portrayal of McCall. However, the box office performance of the trilogy prompted Washington to reconsider his decision, as he shared with Esquire in November, “I’ve come to understand that the ‘Equalizer’ films are important to me too, because they’re for the audience,” he stated emphatically. “They want me to take down the bad guys. ‘We can’t do it; you go do it.’ And I say, ‘Alright, I’ll go do it! Just wait right here. I’ll be back soon!’
Denzel Washington Can Be Seen On Stage
I recently found myself back on Broadway, sharing the stage with the remarkable Jake Gyllenhaal in a stage adaptation of “Othello.” The iconic actor still has a few roles left in his illustrious film career before he hangs up his hat, such as playing the Carthaginian general, Hannibal, in a Netflix production directed by Fuqua. Additionally, it seems he’s set to make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe under the guidance of Ryan Coogler.
The Equalizer 2 is available to stream via Netflix.
