HBO’s new Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, quickly became a streaming hit. Just two days after its premiere on January 18th, it surpassed three popular shows in viewership. The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, the first in the Tales of Dunk and Egg series, and is set about 90 years before the original Game of Thrones.
Currently the most popular show on HBO Max (according to FlixPatrol), A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is beating out other hits like The Pitt, Heated Rivalry, Industry, and Euphoria. While The Pitt also ranks highly, Heated Rivalry, Industry, and Euphoria are all popular for their intense drama, captivating stories, and emotional depth. Though each show is unique, they all share a quality that keeps viewers hooked.
Featuring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Aegon Targaryen, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms feels quite different from Game of Thrones, even though it’s set in the same universe. It’s a more focused and personal story, and generally more upbeat. So far, this approach is working well – critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 88%, while viewers score it at 78%. Here’s what the show is about:
One hundred years before the story of Game of Thrones, Westeros is explored through the adventures of two unexpected heroes. Based on George R.R. Martin’s story, The Hedge Knight, we follow Ser Duncan the Tall, a brave but inexperienced knight, and his small squire, Egg, as they encounter perilous challenges. This takes place during the reign of the Targaryen dynasty, when dragons are still a recent memory, and these unlikely friends are destined for greatness while facing formidable enemies.
Will There Be a Season 2 of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’?

HBO
Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is short and sweet, with only six episodes lasting between 30 and 40 minutes each. The season finale airs on February 22nd, and after that, fans will be waiting for Season 3 of House of the Dragon, which is planned for later in the year. Good news for fans of Dunk and Egg – they will be back for future stories!

I’m so excited – HBO has officially renewed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for a second season! They’ve already started filming, and this time they’re tackling The Sworn Sword (seriously, try saying that title quickly!). We’re getting another six episodes, and thankfully, both Marcus Claffey and Richard Ansell are coming back, which is fantastic news! It’s expected to hit our screens sometime in 2027, but honestly, the wait is going to be tough!
