Disney’s new movie, Alien: Romulus, is proving popular with viewers after receiving positive reviews. The Alien series started with Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, starring Sigourney Weaver, and continued with James Cameron’s action-packed sequel, Aliens (1986). After a period of disappointing follow-ups, Alien: Romulus is being hailed as a successful return to form for the franchise.
In 2019, Disney bought 20th Century Fox, which included the rights to popular franchises like Alien and Predator. The latest installment, Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez and starring Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, was released in theaters in August 2024. It earned $350 million despite costing only $80 million to make, and is now performing very well on streaming services worldwide.
According to FlixPatrol, “Alien: Romulus” is currently the third most popular movie on HBO Max as of January 20th. Over the last few days, it’s been a top three film in 20 different countries. Interestingly, it’s not available on HBO Max or Disney+ in the United States. However, it’s currently the number one movie in countries like Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and others.
U.S. viewers can now watch Alien: Romulus on Prime Video. Globally, HBO Max is seeing a lot of attention for One Battle After Another, currently ranked number one, along with films like Immaculate, the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon (releasing in 2025), Sleepless, and The Phoenician Scheme. The 2025 film Predator: Badlands is anticipated to be available on streaming services in early 2026.
Elle Fanning stars in Predator: Badlands, the first Predator film released in theaters since Disney bought 20th Century Fox. It became the most successful Predator movie ever, earning $180 million around the world. The Predator and Alien series share the same universe, and several movies have combined characters from both franchises, featuring both Xenomorphs and Predators.
The strong performance of Alien: Romulus on streaming follows the success of Predator: Badlands, which did very well as a video-on-demand release before becoming available for streaming. Under Disney’s ownership, both the Predator and Alien series are experiencing a resurgence, with Alien: Romulus receiving an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Predator: Badlands earning an 86%, alongside positive box office results.
The success of the film in theaters and on digital platforms will help strengthen the Alien franchise going forward. Plus, a sequel to Alien: Romulus is already in the works, giving Disney a chance to prove they can keep the momentum going with audiences.
