2026 promises to be a huge year for science fiction fans. Several major franchises will be releasing highly anticipated installments, including Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Dune: Part Three, and The Mandalorian & Grogu. Supergirl is also expected to perform well, building on the positive reception to James Gunn’s Superman. While The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping might not reach the heights of previous films, it’s currently predicted to do surprisingly well. Beyond the franchises, we’ll see original sci-fi films like Project Hail Mary, Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars, and Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day. And there’s one particularly exciting, yet still mysterious, sci-fi movie on the horizon that could be a major hit.
I’m really intrigued by this upcoming film, currently titled Flowervale Street – though that title might still be up for grabs. So, what’s got me excited? Let’s dive into what’s been revealed so far.
Just What Is Flowervale Street?

Flowervale Street is a noteworthy project due to its talented cast and crew. The film stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, both well-known for their work in science fiction – Hathaway in Interstellar and McGregor in the Star Wars films. Adding to the appeal, J.J. Abrams is one of the producers.
Naturally, this has sparked online speculation that it’s a new Cloverfield movie, given the franchise’s history of secrecy. The original film’s trailers revealed very little about the plot, the second movie was announced shortly before its release, and even the title of the third film wasn’t revealed until its Super Bowl LII ad – which also announced it would be available to stream immediately after the game.
It’s true, there’s a bit of a pattern there. Ewan McGregor starring in a secret Cloverfield movie after his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, already appeared in one? However, J.J. Abrams has made plenty of sci-fi films that weren’t connected to Cloverfield. Take Super 8, for example – many fans believed it was a Cloverfield movie leading up to its release.
The film is directed by David Robert Mitchell, known for his critically acclaimed A24 movies It Follows and Under the Silver Lake, which starred Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough. While the budget for Flowervale Street hasn’t been revealed, it’s expected to be larger than his previous projects, suggesting Mitchell is gaining recognition and trust from studios for bigger, more ambitious films.
This story is set in the 1980s, much like the movie Super 8, and centers around a typical suburban family. Their lives take a bizarre turn when strange events start happening, and a storm unexpectedly throws them back in time to the age of dinosaurs. It’s a blend of classic Spielbergian family themes – reminiscent of films like Poltergeist and E.T. – with time travel and dinosaurs, making you wonder why Spielberg wasn’t involved!
The movie Flowervale Street isn’t out until August 14th, but we’ll share any news about it as soon as we get it.
