Since it was invented, television has remained a hugely popular way for people to spend their free time. Shows of all types have achieved great success with both critics and viewers, and the best ones often become part of our culture – or even have a broader impact on society. Because TV tells stories in episodes, it can support many complex and fascinating narratives across a huge variety of genres. The shows that attract the biggest audiences tend to run for many seasons, keeping viewers engaged and building on their initial success.
Many fantastic TV shows don’t get the chance to run for multiple seasons. While long-running shows often allow for great character development, there have been plenty of excellent series that ended too soon. Interestingly, some of the best shows are actually quite short. Because they have to tell their stories quickly, these series consistently deliver high quality and don’t have any weak episodes.
7) Constantine (2014-2015)

Though not widely known, the show Constantine is a hidden gem among DC-based television series. Despite being cancelled after just one season of 13 episodes, Matt Ryan’s portrayal of the character was a fantastic adaptation of the original comics. The show’s unique focus on occult detective work was a smart move, and its quality ultimately led to Ryan reprising the role within the Arrowverse, effectively continuing the show’s story within a larger universe.
6) Almost Human (2013-2014)

Many science fiction TV shows have been canceled too soon, but few were as promising as Almost Human. This 2013 series, starring Karl Urban, was set in 2048 and followed a police detective who was forced to work with an android partner. The show quickly stood out thanks to its detailed and imaginative world, and because it was canceled after just one season of 13 episodes, it’s remembered as a consistently high-quality series with no weak installments.
5) Midnight Mass (2021)

Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass is widely considered one of Netflix’s best horror series, and for good reason. This compelling miniseries tells the story of a remote island community terrorized by a vampire-like creature that arrives with their new priest. Midnight Mass expertly uses Catholic themes and visuals to create a truly frightening and suspenseful experience. The seven-episode series is remarkably consistent, with no slow moments, making it a flawless, self-contained story.
4) Watchmen (2019)

The 2019 series Watchmen boldly reimagined a classic comic book story. Instead of simply retelling the original, it created a sequel that expanded the Watchmen universe in a completely new direction. Surprisingly, the show was also incredibly well-made, with many considering its nine episodes to be a flawless, critically acclaimed television experience that lives up to all the hype.
3) Firefly (2002-2003)

Despite being canceled early on, Firefly has become a hugely popular and beloved sci-fi show. It originally seemed like it would be forgotten, but passionate fans continued to recommend it, keeping its memory alive. Many consider its single 14-episode season to be one of the best beginnings for any sci-fi TV series, with every episode being exceptionally well-made.
2) Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000)

Despite being unfairly canceled after just one season, Freaks and Geeks remains a standout TV show. It featured a remarkably talented cast, including many future stars, and expertly balanced relatable high school drama with genuinely funny, awkward moments. While it’s frustrating the show only lasted 18 episodes, this brevity also means it went out on a high note, offering a perfect example of what great teen comedy can be.
1) Band of Brothers (2001)

Many consider the 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers to be one of the greatest TV shows ever made. This World War II drama tells the true story of Easy Company, a unit of the 101st Airborne Division, from their training through the D-Day invasion and all the way to the end of the war. Each of the show’s ten episodes is intensely moving and dramatic, made even more impactful by its basis in real events. Despite its limited run, Band of Brothers is a true television masterpiece.
