It’s been a significant year for Paramount. They were acquired by Skydance, creating a new entertainment giant, and released successful films like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and the unexpected hit, The Naked Gun. On the TV side, Paramount+ saw popular returning series such as Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, alongside new hits like MobLand. Despite the successes, the year wasn’t without its challenges.
Despite a lot of excitement for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the latest Tom Cruise film didn’t perform much better than the previous installment, Dead Reckoning, and didn’t reach the top spots for the series’ box office numbers. Additionally, Paramount+ released a Star Trek movie that’s considered one of the worst in decades, and it’s likely to win a lot of Razzie awards. However, the biggest challenge for Paramount this year wasn’t a company takeover attempt or failed merger – it’s the potential departure of Taylor Sheridan, a key creative force behind many of their successful shows.
Paramount+ Cancelling Mayor of Kingstown Means Subscribers Keep Getting Bad News

Last October, it was announced that Taylor Sheridan, the creative force behind popular shows like Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Landman, and Lioness, was leaving Paramount. He signed a new deal with NBCUniversal, but would finish his current commitments to Paramount first. Sheridan will begin making movies for Universal later this year. Fortunately for Paramount, he’s still contracted to produce television shows for them until 2028, allowing them to potentially secure more seasons of his hits. However, it now appears that tensions are rising, and a smooth continuation of that relationship is unlikely.
Sources say Cindy Holland, Paramount’s head of streaming, decided to end Mayor of Kingstown after its fifth season, cutting the season short and not renewing the show. This decision reportedly went against the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan’s, desire to continue the series, and may be connected to his move away from Paramount. Puck reports Holland hasn’t greenlit any new projects from Sheridan since last summer, even though he’s still under contract for two more years. She’s also reportedly re-evaluating how Paramount launches its shows and making changes to their strategy.
When Taylor Sheridan announced he was leaving, many fans hoped Paramount would still support his shows. After all, his series consistently perform well for the streaming service – Season 2 of Landman saw a 50% jump in viewers compared to Season 1 and was Paramount+’s most popular show. Plus, Paramount would continue to own these franchises and could create more seasons and spin-offs in the future. However, the sudden ending of Mayor of Kingstown suggests the studio may not be as committed to Sheridan’s projects, especially since he’s planning to move on.
This situation raises a big question about the future of Taylor Sheridan’s other shows, including Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman, as well as planned spin-offs like Frisco King (originally NOLA King) and the entire Yellowstone universe. With Sheridan potentially leaving, it’s unclear whether these shows – many of which have strong viewership – will be allowed to continue. Paramount+ has relied heavily on these shows to attract subscribers, and it’s uncertain how those subscribers will react if the shows are cancelled abruptly. It appears Paramount+ is now preparing to scale back its investment in this successful programming.
