Microsoft has worked with Formula 1 (F1) for a while, but they’ll be changing which racing team they support starting in 2026.
Microsoft first partnered with the team now known as Alpine back in 2012. Starting in the 2026 season, they’re beginning a new, long-term partnership with Mercedes-AMG.
Aside from the Microsoft logo on the car this year, what does this partnership really entail? As expected, it focuses on artificial intelligence – and the Azure platform.
By adding Microsoft Azure and its artificial intelligence tools, the team will significantly boost its computing and data analysis power, both at the factory and during races. Azure’s scalable cloud and AI resources will support crucial tasks like simulations, performance reviews, race strategy development, and overall team analysis. This flexible platform will give engineers and strategists the instant insights they need to make critical decisions.

From my perspective, this appears to be a natural progression of tools Mercedes already utilizes, and Formula 1 is a sector where AI truly shines. The sheer volume of data F1 teams generate is massive, so leveraging AI to help process and analyze it all just seems like a logical and smart move.
Mercedes isn’t stopping with cloud technology and AI. They’re also planning to use Microsoft’s GitHub to improve and speed up how their software is created.
Microsoft has recently faced criticism for focusing so heavily on AI, but my main issue isn’t the focus itself – it’s that they haven’t yet demonstrated compelling reasons for people to get excited about it.
Let’s be real, most of us aren’t going to start a Formula 1 racing team. But this is a great example of where artificial intelligence really shines. It can process huge amounts of data much quicker than any person could.
In Formula 1 racing, data is absolutely crucial. While the drivers handle the cars, they rely heavily on a constant stream of information from sensors. Without it, they’d be severely hampered, like trying to race with a brake on.
Maybe we’ll be seeing the Microsoft logo back on the podium this year. Here’s hoping.
