Season 15 of Death in Paradise promises exciting developments! We’ll see Selwyn return to his position as commissioner, and Mervin will embark on a personal journey as he meets his half-brother, Solomon, for the very first time. The overarching theme of the new season is clearly fresh starts and new chapters.
Well, for some, anyway.
Catherine, the beloved mayor of Saint Marie and owner of the town’s most popular bar, feels stuck – especially considering the clues from season 14.
She told Naomi and Darlene she’d started dating someone, with a playful look in her eyes. She added that it was still new and they were just enjoying getting to know each other.
That was all the information we received. Catherine remained enigmatic, leaving us eagerly anticipating what the writers would reveal about her next.
We naturally expected things to continue as they had before. We were confident that her hinting at a new, very secretive relationship would eventually develop into something more.
That teasing moment was brief, sure, but it was a moment nonetheless.
If we didn’t address this further, it would be meaningless—why bring it up in the first place? It would also seem like a weak way of pointing out she has a life outside of dealing with everyone else’s issues.
Honestly, it would really bug me if that happened, and it would just be bad writing, too. A lot of us fans have been hoping Catherine finds a love interest for ages now, and for good reason! It feels like a natural next step for her story.
I’ve dated a few people occasionally, but honestly, I don’t remember much about it – and that pretty much says it all.
The hints dropped during season 14 clearly suggested a new romantic storyline for Catherine. Both viewers and actress Élizabeth Bourgine – who expressed in 2024 that she’d love to see Catherine find love on Virgin Radio UK – seemed to be anticipating it. At least, that’s what I believed.
Unfortunately, Bourgine has stated that Catherine won’t be getting that opportunity anytime soon.

That’s all for now on the romance front. While there’s potential for dating or a relationship in the future, season 15 doesn’t feature any of that. Don Gilet did playfully suggest Catherine might be attracted to Mervin, which would be a surprising twist!
He playfully hinted at keeping the idea a secret, calling it intriguing. Bourgine laughed, and he jokingly chided her, pretending to be annoyed, saying, “Don’t react like that!” He then playfully told her to stop.
Honestly, if the story wasn’t going to delve into Catherine’s romantic relationships, why bring it up at all?
The character’s motivations always deserved a closer look, and the writers seemed to recognize that. However, they’ve taken this exploration to an extreme, ultimately leading nowhere and leaving audiences frustrated, asking themselves, ‘when will things finally happen?’

Catherine’s strongest relationship might be her steadfast friendship with Selwyn, especially considering how fiercely she defended him when he faced losing his job. However, much of what we see from Catherine – in this relationship and others – revolves around taking care of everyone else. While her supportive nature is a valuable part of the show and who she is, it sometimes overshadows her own development as a character.
We wouldn’t want to define her solely by her romantic life, but her longing for a partner has become a significant part of her character and offers a lot of potential for compelling and meaningful storytelling.
This season, Catherine will play a bigger role in the show’s investigations. The creators describe her as a key source of information, well-connected and knowledgeable about everyone involved. We’ll also learn more about her history with the new sergeant, Mattie Fletcher, as the season unfolds.
As for Catherine’s love life, though, that will have to keep waiting.
Death in Paradise season 15 premieres on 30th January at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
