2025’s Best Dinosaur Movie Just Confirmed a Sequel, But Fans Will Have to Wait

Although it was a hit, the popular dinosaur film Jurassic World Rebirth wasn’t actually the best dinosaur movie of 2025. While the Jurassic World series has long been the leader in dinosaur movies, this 2025 release – featuring a new cast and the familiar plot of people trapped on a dinosaur-filled island – earned $869.1 million globally. However, a sequel is still a ways off, and another film ultimately topped it as the year’s best.

The sci-fi horror film Primitive War, an Australian movie featuring dinosaurs, is getting a sequel! Variety reports that Luke Sparke, who wrote, directed, and produced the original, will return to do the same for the new film through his production company, Sparke Films. He was heavily involved in the first movie’s creation, handling editing, production design, and visual effects, though it’s unknown if he’ll take on all those roles again.

According to director Sparke, the original dinosaur film focused on initial discovery. The upcoming sequel, Primitive War 2, explores what happens when things spiral out of control – when nature evolves quicker than our strategies, and the conflict becomes less important than the consequences it unleashes. The film is currently scheduled for release in 2027.

Primitive War 2 Comes As a Slight Surprise

Despite being well-received, the follow-up to Primitive War is unexpected. The first film centers on a rescue team sent into the Vietnamese jungle in 1968 to locate a lost platoon of Green Berets. They soon discover they’re not alone – a hostile Russian unit is also present, and even more surprisingly, dinosaurs are running wild and attacking everything in sight.

Critics generally liked Primitive War, giving it a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences loved it even more, with an 86% score. Jurassic World Rebirth received lower scores from critics (50%) and audiences (70%). Although Jurassic World Rebirth earned nearly $900 million, Primitive War only made $1.2 million despite a $7 million budget – a result largely due to the efforts of one key person. It’s surprising, then, that a sequel to Primitive War is planned, given the financial loss.

Reports suggest the upcoming film, Primitive War 2, will continue to be set during the Vietnam War, but will focus more directly on the war itself rather than just featuring dinosaurs. The first movie involved a device that created a portal to other dimensions, but it was destroyed. Now, the dinosaurs that came through are facing off against a new American platoon, while the Russians are still involved and creating conflict.
