The upcoming Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, delves further into the turbulent era following the Emperor’s rise to power. Starting right after the events of Revenge of the Sith, the show is set during a time when the Empire is firmly establishing control and organized resistance is still years away. While most of the Jedi were eliminated by Order 66, a few survived, including Darth Maul – Palpatine’s former apprentice who once attempted to challenge his master.
Lucasfilm has released the first trailer for Maul – Shadow Lord, a visually striking animated series that showcases the brutal and intense world of a Sith Apprentice. The series premieres on April 6, 2026, and will continue through Star Wars Day on May 4th. Fans can expect to see some returning characters, and there’s a possibility of even more familiar faces appearing.
13. Darth Maul – Confirmed
The main focus of the series will be Darth Maul. It will show what happened after his defeat in Revenge of the Sith, detailing how he rebuilt his criminal organization and became the head of Crimson Dawn, the group seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story. The series begins a year after Revenge of the Sith, and while it’s unclear if the show will jump forward in time, we’ll likely see how Maul’s empire grew.
12. “Darth Talon” – Confirmed

The new comic, Maul – Shadow Lord, will feature a character named Devon Izara, a Jedi Padawan who managed to survive the execution of the Jedi (Order 66). She will be trained by Maul himself. The character is inspired by Darth Talon, a Sith from older Star Wars stories, who George Lucas originally considered as Maul’s apprentice in plans for future films that were never made. This comic is a way of honoring Lucas’s original vision by making that apprenticeship a reality.
11. Marrok – Confirmed

You might remember Inquisitor Marrok from the Ahsoka series, where he was brought back to life by Morgan Elsbeth, a Nightsister, and fought Ahsoka Tano. Since then, Marrok has appeared frequently in Star Wars animated shows, and his history has been explored further in Tales of the Empire. A new trailer for Maul – Shadow Lord suggests Marrok will be tasked with killing Maul, and this mission could be his last.
10. Eleventh Brother – Confirmed

Okay, so we got another look at the Inquisitors with the Eleventh Brother showing up in Tales of the Jedi. It was a short appearance, though – he ended up getting taken down by Ahsoka Tano! The Maul – Shadow Lord trailer gives us some cool context, too. It looks like he’s fighting Maul before he gets sent after Ahsoka, which would be about a year after Revenge of the Sith. It’s neat to see how everything’s lining up timeline-wise.
9. Rook Kast – Confirmed

Lucasfilm has announced the return of Rook Kast, a Mandalorian warrior who previously fought alongside Darth Maul during the Clone Wars. It appears Kast will continue to support Maul, even with the rise of the Empire, and will likely be a key leader in Maul’s rebuilding of his criminal organization.
8. Palpatine – Possible

It’s unclear if Emperor Palpatine will physically appear in the series – either in the present or through flashbacks – but his influence will definitely be felt. The trailer shows he’s the one sending the Inquisitors to hunt down Maul, wanting him eliminated. It would make sense for Palpatine to have a brief appearance, maybe even finishing off Maul himself. However, he could also work through someone else entirely.
7. Darth Vader – Possible

Given that Darth Vader commands the Inquisitors, it’s highly probable he’ll pursue Maul if his agents can’t capture him. If this happens, the comic Maul – Shadow Lord could finally deliver the long-awaited showdown between Maul and Vader that fans have wanted since Maul first appeared in The Phantom Menace.
6. Grand Inquisitor – Possible

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always found the Grand Inquisitor fascinating. He used to be a Jedi Temple Guard, but now he’s in charge of all the Inquisitors – basically, he leads them on missions and handles all their stuff. Knowing the Emperor personally assigned hunting down Maul as a top priority, I’m certain the Grand Inquisitor would be heavily involved in that hunt, one way or another.
5. Asajj Ventress – Possible

Asajj Ventress, once a deadly assassin trained by Count Dooku, is now a regular character in animated Star Wars stories. We’ve learned a lot about what she did after the rise of the Emperor: she was brought back to life using Nightsister magic and worked as a bounty hunter, eventually even taking on her own apprentice. Because she’s a good match for Darth Maul, there’s a chance she might show up in future episodes.
4. Dryden Vos – Possible

Dryden Vos was introduced in Solo: A Star Wars Story as a key member of Darth Maul’s organization during the time of the Empire. It’s unclear exactly when he started working with Maul, so it’s uncertain if he’ll appear in future stories. However, if he does, it could reveal that Maul – Shadow Lord details the origins of Crimson Dawn, as Dryden Vos led the group on Maul’s behalf.
3. Qi’ra – Possible

Qi’ra, Han Solo’s initial love interest, became involved with the criminal organization Crimson Dawn thirteen years before the Battle of Yavin – six years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. It’s unclear if the Maul – Shadow Lord story jumps around in time, so while it’s possible she could appear, it seems improbable.
2. Jabba the Hutt – Possible

Maul is trying to establish a powerful criminal organization, and in doing so, he’s likely to come into conflict with other crime lords. This could lead to a confrontation with Jabba the Hutt, who was also becoming a major figure in the criminal world at the same time.
1. Ahsoka

Then there’s Ahsoka Tano, who remains a possibility. She joined the early rebellion about a year after Revenge of the Sith, and she has a past with Darth Maul. However, bringing her into the story might overshadow everything else.
