One Sweet Toy Story Favor Tim Allen Will Do For Former TV Co-Stars, Including Kaitlyn Dever

I’m a big Tim Allen fan! He’s had so much success with shows like his upcoming one, Shifting Gears, and of course, everyone loves The Santa Clause movies. But honestly, I think he really became iconic as Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story. It’s awesome to hear he’s such a great guy and will do a favor for his old co-stars, like Kaitlyn Dever from Last Man Standing – that’s really sweet of him!

The popularity of Toy Story is still going strong, with a fifth movie already planned for release in 2026. Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear, is continuing to embrace his role and stay connected with his former co-stars from the Toy Story films. He recently told Us Weekly that he’s delighted to be bringing joy to the children of his original on-screen ‘kids’ through a special connection to the franchise.

I’ve seen it all, really – celebrations like holidays and weddings, big life moments like birthdays, and sadly, even memorial services. It’s strange, because even after someone’s gone, I sometimes still connect with their family. I’ve even continued doing the voice of Buzz Lightyear for their kids, which is… a really special thing.

Tim Allen has been busy with appearances related to his former shows, including Home Improvement, Last Man Standing, and Shifting Gears. It’s heartwarming that he continues to do the voice of Buzz Lightyear for the children of his former TV co-stars – essentially, his ‘TV grandkids.’ While he’s likely done the voice for many fans over the years, it’s especially nice to see him doing it for the families of those he worked with.

Beyond his famous Buzz voice, Tim Allen offers a wealth of experience to his fellow actors. Having worked in the industry for many years, he enjoys sharing his wisdom, particularly with younger cast members who are still developing their skills. He’s become a mentor on set, a role he realized while working with Jonathan Adams on Last Man Standing. He explained:

I worked as a mentor on Last Man Standing with Kaitlyn Dever because I connected with her sense of humor. I focused on supporting her as much as possible, and it was great to see her subtly incorporate my suggestions into her performances – I didn’t even realize she was doing it at first!

Given that Dever recently made a surprise appearance for Allen on the set of Shifting Gears, it makes sense they previously had a mentor-mentee relationship during their time on Last Man Standing. This highlights how close Allen is to her and many of his former colleagues, and it’s likely they’ll maintain that connection long after Shifting Gears finishes – hopefully not for a very long time!

You know, it’s become pretty obvious that Tim Allen has no intention of retiring his Buzz Lightyear voice, and he really enjoys guiding and advising his fellow actors. It’s also heartwarming to see how close he still is with so many of his old co-stars – that Home Improvement reunion at the start of Shifting Gears Season 2 was fantastic, and I’m really hoping we’ll get to see a lot more of those kinds of moments in the future.

Tim Allen fans can hear him reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5, which comes out in theaters on June 16th. If you enjoy his comedy with his Shifting Gears co-stars, new episodes air Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC. Both the Toy Story films and Shifting Gears are also available for streaming with a subscription to Hulu and Disney+.
