Wow, Winter 2026 was incredible for anime! It felt like everything I’d been waiting for was finally here, with sequels to shows like Jujutsu Kaisen, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Oshi no Ko, and even Fire Force making a comeback. Honestly, with so much already going on, I didn’t think a brand new series could really break through the noise. But then Sentenced to Be a Hero came along! It’s Crunchyroll’s latest action-fantasy, and it absolutely blew me away with its amazing hour-long first episode – it quickly became a favorite!
Studio Kai’s anime adaptation of Sentenced to Be a Hero is visually stunning, but the story itself is even more captivating. The series follows Xylo and his group – individuals labeled as “Heroes” despite having committed serious crimes – as they strive to genuinely become heroes. While they’ve shown heroic qualities from the start, the latest episode really emphasizes this theme, with the group finally receiving praise for their actions. This moment establishes the show’s core pattern: a compelling journey of redemption and heroism.
Sentenced to Be a Hero Episode 3 Shows How Xylo Will Redeem the Meaning of Heroes

In the third episode of Sentenced to Be a Hero, Xylo, Norgalle, and Tatsuya delve into the mines and find the trapped villagers. Despite learning they are Heroes, one villager sincerely thanks the group for being the only ones to offer help. The episode does a great job of developing the characters, especially Norgalle, who comes across as arrogant but still acts like a noble leader. He ultimately makes the selfless choice to save the villagers, demonstrating his strength of character. It becomes clear that Xylo won’t be the only hero – both Tatsuya and Norgalle are essential in defeating the demon and ensuring the villagers’ escape.
Despite some villagers still being cautious, those Xylo and his companions rescued are deeply grateful. This is especially clear when the daughter of a rescued miner personally thanks Xylo, calling him a hero. Even Kivia recognizes their bravery, stopping a priest from interrupting the heartfelt praise and letting them enjoy the recognition they deserve.
Watching the most recent episodes of Sentenced to Be a Hero, I’m starting to get a clear sense of where the story is headed. It seems Xylo and his friends will be traveling around, helping smaller towns along the way, and in the process, really challenging what it means to be a hero. It’s fascinating to see how their actions are even affecting the way people view the Holy Knights, especially Kivia, who’s definitely keeping a close eye on them. Honestly, it’s a really engaging formula – I find myself genuinely invested in Xylo’s group and hoping they can make a real difference. And with hints of deeper backstories coming for characters like Norgalle and Tatsuya – something fans have been asking for – plus plenty of action, intense moments, and emotional twists, Sentenced to Be a Hero feels like it’s on track to become one of the best fantasy action series we’ve seen in a long time – not just this year, but for a few years running.
