Savannah Guthrie Details Feeling Like a “Failure” After Divorce

Savannah Guthrie is going on the record about her divorce.

During an interview on the Today Show, Hoda Kotb asked Savannah Guthrie about the toughest period she’d faced. Savannah shared that her divorce from Mark Orchard in 2009, after four years of marriage, was particularly difficult.

Savannah, 54, recently shared that going through her first divorce in her 30s was a really tough time. She admitted feeling old at the time, but now realizes she was actually quite young, and it made her very sad.

She explained that she was beginning a new job at NBC while simultaneously dealing with other dreams that weren’t working out. It was a difficult time, and she felt like she was failing as she struggled to pursue her ambitions and build a better future.

The Emmy-winning journalist, who is married to Michael Feldman and has two children – Vale, 11, and Charley, 9 – also explained how a difficult time in her life helped her grow closer to her faith.

She shared that her faith grew stronger when she realized God’s love wasn’t dependent on her being perfect or even succeeding. Despite feeling like a failure, she felt deeply loved and supported by God, and that experience was a pivotal moment in her life.

She recently spoke about her relationship with her husband, a broadcast producer she married in 2005, after previously explaining why she hadn’t included details about it in her 2024 book, Mostly What God Does.

Savannah shared on the July 1st episode of Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast that she doesn’t want to discuss her divorce. She described it as a deeply painful experience that took years to overcome, and while she isn’t placing blame, she prefers not to go into detail about it.

Savannah explained in her book that she purposely didn’t share every detail of difficult times, noting that some experiences were simply too private and shameful to include.

She explained she was uncomfortable sharing the full story behind her painful experience – her feet were badly burned on the pavement, and she had a lot of blisters. She didn’t want to go into all the unpleasant details, but wanted to acknowledge she understood people might be curious and that her explanation might not be sufficient.

Despite asking for privacy, the mother of two said she’s happy with how respectfully the media has covered her personal life.

She said that people she interviewed generally respected her personal boundaries, and she was grateful for that consideration, not taking it for granted.
