Donald Trump and Jimmy Kimmel currently have a tense but notable connection. While Trump has expressed a desire to remove Kimmel and other late-night hosts from television, Kimmel regularly uses his show to share his opinions on Trump’s presidency. Now, Brendan Carr, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission who was involved in Kimmel’s suspension last year, is proposing rules that would limit late-night talk shows, which has upset Kimmel.
Jimmy Kimmel started his show on Thursday by criticizing Stephen Carr for attempting to limit free speech. This came after Carr suggested talk shows, including The View, should be required to give equal airtime to all political candidates. New guidance from the FCC clarifies that late-night shows aren’t considered legitimate news programs and therefore aren’t exempt from the equal time rule. Donald Trump quickly shared this news online, specifically mentioning Kimmel’s show and The View. However, Kimmel wasn’t going to let this issue go unchallenged.
They’re changing established rules to hold us back, and this situation is a bit tricky. It’s more complex than the last issue, so I want to explain it clearly.
I remember when Trump was complaining that Kamala Harris was getting more TV time than him before the election – he was really fixated on it! It’s pretty wild to see him now upset that he’s the one getting all the attention. Jimmy Kimmel really broke down the whole history of the rule that covers this, and it was a great watch. You can find the whole segment online if you want to check it out.
Kimmel Rallies Against an Outdated Rule
The ‘equal time rule’ comes from the early days of radio. As Jimmy Kimmel pointed out, it’s become outdated because there are now countless media options, and people aren’t all tuning into the same few stations anymore.
He explained the joke, saying things have changed a lot since the 1950s. Back then, only three TV networks existed. Now, with cable, streaming services, satellite, podcasts, and social media, there are literally thousands of different ways to get information and entertainment.
Kimmel then criticized conservative media personalities who freely promote Donald Trump and the Republican Party without financial constraints.
These days, there are numerous news channels, and some dedicate all their airtime to covering Donald Trump – like Fox News, Newsmax, One America News, and Real America’s Voice. While these channels aren’t legally obligated to present multiple viewpoints, we are because we broadcast on public airwaves. The rule requiring equal time for different perspectives was originally intended to prevent broadcasters from unfairly shaping public opinion. However, traditional television isn’t the only source of information anymore.
Look, as a total movie fan, I’m a little worried about how these new FCC rules will affect shows like mine, and honestly, nobody seems to know exactly what’s going to happen. I really don’t! We’ll just have to wait and see. But I want to be clear – it feels like this administration is always looking for ways to silence anyone who disagrees with them, and they’re using regulations as a way to do it. It’s just… frustrating.
