Rebecca Ferguson’s New Sci-Fi Kills Her RT Masterpiece Streak (but It’ll Be Fixed Later in 2026)

Many aren’t surprised that this new science fiction movie is receiving very negative reviews. While the initial idea wasn’t very strong, the involvement of Jessica Ferguson and Chris Pratt gave some people hope. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t live up to expectations, and it’s a setback for Ferguson, who had a near-perfect streak with sci-fi projects like the Dune films and Apple TV+’s Silo. However, the upcoming Dune: Part Three is expected to be well-received and likely restore her positive reputation with fans.

I just saw the new movie, Mercy, with Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, and stars like Ferguson and Pratt, and honestly, it’s not doing well – it only has a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes! It takes place sometime in the near future, and the story is about a detective, played by Pratt, who’s accused of killing his wife. He has just 90 minutes to clear his name, because if he doesn’t, the AI court system he helped build – Judge Maddox, played by Ferguson – will decide his fate, acting as both judge and executioner.

There Was Little Hope for Mercy

The movie received overwhelmingly negative reviews. Adam Olinger of Adam Does Movies criticized it as a waste of time, comparing it to watching someone react to things in a chair – something he could easily find for free online. Dionar Hildago of Algo Más Que Cine was even more critical, giving the film a score of 2 out of 10 and calling it a visually appealing but ultimately empty dystopian thriller that subtly promotes ideas of surveillance and authoritarian control.

While critics had a mixed response, general audiences seemed to really enjoy the movie Mercy. One viewer praised it as a “fantastic, well-done thinking piece” about AI, noting the good pacing and Rebecca Ferguson’s excellent performance – they were even counting her blinks! They said they’d definitely watch it again. Another viewer appreciated the action, tension, and acting, though they felt the CGI car crashes weren’t the best and the ending became a bit confusing with too much explanation. Overall, they thought it was worth seeing.
