The world of Stargate began with the 1994 film by Roland Emmerich, but it was the Stargate SG-1 TV series that truly captured audiences. Premiering on Showtime in 1997, the show ran for ten seasons, creating memorable characters and launching a whole universe of spin-offs with dedicated fans. Now that Stargate SG-1 is available on Netflix, we’re taking a look at what happened to each of the main characters after the series finale, “Unending,” which aired in 2006. Let’s dive in!
9. George S. Hammond (Don S. Davis)

At the start of the show, George S. Hammond led Stargate Command, later becoming a Lieutenant General and the head of Homeworld Security in season nine. After officially retiring, he was sadly revealed to have died of a heart attack in season five of Stargate: Atlantis. In his honor, Samantha Carter renames a new spaceship, the Phoenix, the George Hammond after taking command.
8. Henry “Hank” Landry (Beau Bridges)

In season 9, Henry Landry took command of Stargate Command and asked Cameron Mitchell to assemble a new team after the original one broke up. He was also on board the Odyssey when it experienced a time dilation field that aged everyone on board by 50 years. Sadly, Landry appeared to die during this event, but the team was able to reverse time and bring him back.
He was in charge of the mission to find the Ark in The Ark of Truth, and afterwards, he led the team during the fight against the Super-hive. It was during this battle that he appointed Samantha Carter as the new commander of Stargate Command.
7. Jonas Quinn (Corin Nemec)

Jonas Quinn is the scientist who became part of the SG-1 team after escaping the Kelownans, who had wrongly accused his friend, Daniel Jackson. It took some convincing, especially after Daniel’s supposed death, but he eventually earned the team’s trust. Sadly, it was later discovered that his home planet had been taken over by the Ori, and the show never told us what happened to him after that.
I was so relieved to hear from Joseph Mallozzi, one of the show’s producers, about what happened to Quinn! He explained on his blog that Quinn, or Jonas as he’s known on his home planet, actually led the fight against the Ori there. Apparently, they were successful in freeing his people, and he’s still alive and leading them now. It’s great to know he made it and is doing well!
6. Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder)

Cameron Mitchell became the new leader of SG-1 after Samantha Carter, and stayed in charge until the show ended. Immediately after the series finale, he led a mission to locate the Ark of Truth, which was depicted in the movie Stargate: The Ark of Truth. During this mission, he worked alongside Samantha Carter again, and they both returned to the SGC once they succeeded.
After the attack on Atlantis, Mitchell rejoined forces with Teal’c to fight Queen Death. Although the battle was chaotic and their landing was rough, Mitchell survived. It’s unclear if he participated in any further missions after that.
5. Vala Mal Doran (Claudia Black)

Vala Mal Doran frequently assisted SG-1 and Daniel Jackson on their missions. She famously warned them about an impending Ori attack – by temporarily possessing Jackson’s body! Jackson later helped rescue Doran and bring her into the Stargate Command (SGC). Eventually, she joined SG-1 as a full member. While trapped in a time dilation field for fifty years, she developed a romantic relationship with Daniel Jackson, but this was erased when time was reset to normal.
Doran participated in the mission detailed in The Ark of Truth, which caused friction with her husband, Tomin. After the team defeated Adria, Vala chose to remain on Earth with SG-1 instead of returning with Tomin. She assisted SG-1 in eliminating the last Ba’al clone and helped those previously controlled by the Ba’al cope with the consequences. Later, she rejoined the fight during the second battle for Atlantis.
4. Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks)

As a huge Stargate SG-1 fan, I always loved Daniel Jackson. He’s actually been with the team longer than anyone, which is wild considering he wasn’t always there! He went through this whole thing where he ‘ascended’ – basically became a being of pure energy – after sacrificing himself to save people on Kelowna. But thankfully, he eventually came back to being human and rejoined SG-1, which was a relief because the team just wasn’t the same without him.
Following his experiences in Stargate: The Ark of Truth and the defeat of the Ori, Jackson joined SG-1 in their search for the final clone of Ba’al, appearing in Stargate: Continuum. During this pursuit, he was injured while trying to prevent a rogue group of Asgard from utilizing a dangerous weapon. He later returned to Atlantis, collaborating with AR-1 to locate an Asgard facility and ultimately find Aiden Ford, and continued to be involved in future missions.
3. Teal’c (Christopher Judge)

Teal’c was a key member of the Stargate SG-1 team, joining after escaping his former masters and assisting SG-1 in their initial escape. He quickly became a popular character and proved essential to the team’s survival when they faced a crisis aboard the Odyssey. Teal’c bravely remained inside a time-altering field, allowing his teammates to fix a critical problem and save the ship from destruction.
Teal’c teamed up with some of his SG-1 colleagues in The Ark of Truth and later reunited with Samantha Carter on Atlantis, where he became friends with and a mentor to Ronon Dex. He then rejoined SG-1 to hunt down the last of Ba’al’s clones in Stargate: Continuum, before traveling to Atlantis with the team to help defend the city from Queen Death’s attack, ultimately surviving the battle.
2. Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson)

I started watching Stargate SG-1 when it first came out, and I loved having Jack O’Neill as the leader of SG-1. He was in charge for the first eight seasons, and honestly, it was tough seeing him move up to Brigadier General and hand the team over to Sam Carter. But it was a great transition, and I was still so excited to see what they would do!
Even after stepping down as leader, O’Neill remained involved in many missions, crucially helping SG-1 defeat the Ori. He reappeared in Stargate: Continuum to assist in capturing Ba’al’s final clone and was subsequently promoted back to Lieutenant General. Following the effort to return Atlantis to the Pegasus galaxy, O’Neill aided in its defense against Queen Death’s assault. He continued to contribute to Stargate operations and participated in various political matters. The series left viewers wondering if his relationship with Samantha Carter was still ongoing.
1. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping)

Samantha Carter is a central figure throughout the series. For years, she served as second-in-command to Jack O’Neill, eventually leading SG-1 herself. Later, she became a key leader on Stargate: Atlantis and ultimately took charge of Stargate Command. She also played a critical role in the crew’s survival during the events of the series finale.
Even after the original series ended, Carter remained a key figure in the franchise. She soon teamed up with Cameron Mitchell again in the movie SG-1: The Ark of Truth. She was then promoted to Colonel and participated in a mission to locate the lost city of Atlantis. Later, she rejoined the SG-1 team and had another encounter with Jack O’Neill during a mission.
Carter initially led Stargate Command on a temporary basis. Following her successful leadership, she took command of the George Hammond and faced many challenging and emotional battles. She later earned the rank of Brigadier General and returned to lead Stargate Command.
