Ubisoft Has Reportedly Killed One of Its Biggest Franchises for Good

Ubisoft, a well-known game developer and publisher, has been facing difficulties in recent years. Popular franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry have lost some of their appeal, and the company has struggled to launch successful new games. They’ve also experienced costly failures with online games and licensing deals, all while maintaining a very large and expensive workforce. This created an unsustainable situation, leading to a recent major investment from Tencent. Without this investment, the company was at serious risk of failure and was heading in that direction.

While Ubisoft is making changes and receiving investment, not all of its game franchises will likely continue. Reports indicate that the Watch Dogs series is being discontinued.

A Major PS4 and Xbox One Ubisoft IP Gone

According to Tom Henderson, a trusted source with a strong track record of accurate reporting on Ubisoft, the company has likely abandoned the game series. This decision probably stems from the poor performance of its most recent installment.

Ubisoft first showed off Watch Dogs back in 2012, and it quickly became one of the most hyped games for the new PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. It was meant to be a prime example of what those consoles could do. When it finally launched in 2014 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, however, it didn’t quite live up to the hype. While it received scores in the 77-80 range on Metacritic – a respectable result – it wasn’t the blockbuster many predicted. Despite this, the game was a commercial success, selling over 10 million copies.

Following the initial success of Watch Dogs, a sequel, Watch Dogs 2, was released two years later. It received generally positive reviews and sold a comparable number of copies, prompting the development of a third installment. However, Watch Dogs Legion, released in 2020, marked a turning point. Critics scored it lower, with Metacritic ratings between 66 and 76 – a drop from the previous games. Sales also declined significantly. Ubisoft stopped reporting sales figures after the first few days, when 1.9 million copies were sold. Since then, the Watch Dogs series has been inactive, though a movie adaptation is still in production, likely representing an investment made before the decision to pause further game development.
