2027 is shaping up to be a huge year for animated movies! Many projects have already been announced, including sequels to popular films, the revival of favorite franchises, and brand new stories. Here’s a look at what we know, ranked from most to least anticipated.
Animated films consistently perform well in theaters, and 2027 is predicted to be an especially strong year for them. Based on past successes, several animated sequels and new franchises are likely to be among the year’s biggest hits. Here’s a look at 11 confirmed animated movies, listed from those we’re least to most excited about.
11) Cocomelon: The Movie

Universal Pictures is creating a computer-animated movie based on the popular children’s show, Cocomelon, and it’s predicted to be a huge success in theaters. Although the movie is made for very young children, it’s still a significant animated release planned for next year, making it a noteworthy project. Cocomelon: The Movie is currently scheduled to come out on February 26, 2027, which makes it one of the first films on the release schedule.
10) The Bluey Movie

The hugely popular animated series Bluey is getting its own movie! After more than 150 episodes, the beloved show will be hitting theaters on August 6, 2027.
Ludo Studios and BBC Studios are teaming up to make a movie based on the popular TV show. The movie will bring back the original actors and director Richard Jeffrey. Fans of the show will be thrilled, and it’s expected to appeal to the same young viewers as the original series.
9) Ice Age: Boiling Point

The popular Ice Age movies are coming back in 2027 with a sixth installment, titled Ice Age: Boiling Point. Originally made by BlueSky Studios, the new film will now be produced by 20th Century Animation following Disney’s purchase of FOX and the closure of BlueSky. Boiling Point is scheduled to hit theaters on February 5, 2027.
Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Simon Pegg, and Queen Latifah are all coming back for the next Ice Age movie, currently titled Boiling Point. While details about the plot are still under wraps, the film will continue the story of Manny and his friends after the events of 2016’s Ice Age: Collision Course.
8) Buds

Sony Pictures Animation is creating a new animated movie called Buds, scheduled to come out in 2027. It will be released between two other films, GOAT and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Currently, very little is known about Buds, although some believe it might be a story about plants that can talk. The movie is set to premiere on March 12, 2027.
7) Frozen 3

Fans have been waiting for it, and Frozen 3 is officially coming to theaters on November 24, 2027! The new film follows the huge success of Frozen 2, which helped Disney re-establish itself as a maker of quality animated sequels after a long break. Disney announced plans for a third movie right after Frozen 2 came out, and now we finally have a release date.
As a huge fan, I’m eagerly awaiting news about Frozen 3, but details are still very secret! Frozen 2 didn’t really leave us with a clear idea of what the next movie would be about. What I’ve heard is that Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 will actually be one big story told over two movies, and Disney is planning to make both of them at the same time, which is exciting!
6) Gatto

Pixar’s next original animated film, Gatto, is scheduled for release in 2027, following Hoppers in 2026. Pixar’s original movies are always highly anticipated and showcase the studio’s best ideas. With Elio not performing well at the box office and some questions surrounding Hoppers, Gatto is a crucial film for Pixar, and the studio is hoping it will be a hit when it comes out on March 5, 2027.
I’m really excited about Enrico Casarosa’s new film, Gatto! He’s the director behind La Luna and Luca, both of which I absolutely loved. Right now, all we know is it’s going to be about a cat, which is already enough to get me interested! They’ve only shared some concept art so far, so there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding the movie, and I’m eagerly waiting to find out more.
5) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2

As a huge TMNT fan, I genuinely think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is the strongest film in the whole series. The animation is just gorgeous, and they really nailed that cool, nostalgic ’90s vibe. I was starting to worry we’d never see another one, but thankfully Mutant Mayhem 2 is finally coming out – mark your calendars for September 17, 2027!
The next movie will feature Shredder as a main villain, building on his brief appearance at the end of the first Mutant Mayhem film. Details about the sequel are currently scarce, leaving plenty of room for exciting possibilities.
4) Shrek 5
When Shrek Forever After came out in 2010, it looked like the end of the Shrek movies. But now, a fifth Shrek film is planned for release in 2027! Fans have waited nearly twenty years to see Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey back for a new adventure in Far Far Away, and the original voice actors – Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy – are returning. The movie is scheduled to come out on June 30, 2027.
Not much is known about the plot of Shrek 5, so it remains a bit of a secret. However, we do know that Marcello Hernández, Skyler Gisondo, and Zendaya are joining the cast, playing the characters Fergus, Farkle, and Felicia. Fans can look forward to seeing the original Shrek cast all grown up in the next movie.
3) The Simpsons Movie 2

The Simpsons is the longest-running animated series ever, but surprisingly, it’s only had one full-length movie until now. The 2008 film, The Simpsons Movie, was well-received and revitalized the show. However, a sequel has been a long time coming, and The Simpsons Movie 2 is finally scheduled for release on September 3, 2027.
Many fans feel that The Simpsons has been getting worse over the years due to weak writing and the voice actors getting older, leading them to question how much longer the show will last. A potential Simpsons Movie 2 could serve as both a tribute to the series and a final farewell. Even if the show continues, this movie might be the last major Simpsons event to capture the public’s attention.
2) Sonic The Hedgehog 4

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was a fantastic surprise and the strongest film in the series so far. Each movie has been better than the last, so fans are really looking forward to Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is scheduled to come out on March 19, 2027.
The end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hinted at the next movie’s story: Amy Rose will appear, and a lot of robotic copies of Sonic are on the scene, suggesting a time-travel adventure. Although details are scarce, this ending makes Sonic 4 feel much bigger in scale. With the possibility of Shadow the Hedgehog returning, the fourth film is shaping up to be a major event for fans of the Sonic games.
1) Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

The highly anticipated sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is now scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2027. Fans have been waiting since Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse left them on a cliffhanger in June 2023. Originally expected in March 2024, the release date was first pushed to March 2025, and now it’s set for June 28, 2027.
Even after several delays, the anticipation for Beyond the Spider-Verse remains high. The first two movies were groundbreaking successes, earning both critical praise and huge box office numbers. Fans expect the third film to be just as amazing, making it the most eagerly awaited animated movie of 2027.
