Released in 2019, Avengers: Endgame continues to be one of the most popular and financially successful films ever made. It achieved massive success by nearly every measure, particularly at the box office, where it broke numerous records and became the highest-grossing movie of all time. Building on the established Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film’s epic story and grand scale captivated audiences. Many of the records Endgame set still stand today, and few films since have reached the same level of widespread popularity.
A surprising Disney movie has broken one of the impressive box office records previously held by Avengers: Endgame. While many predicted Avatar 3 would be the one to surpass Endgame, it was actually Zootopia 2 that achieved this feat. Endgame had been the highest-grossing Hollywood film in China until Zootopia 2’s unexpected success in the Chinese market pushed it into first place.
What Zootopia 2’s Success Means For Hollywood’s Box Office Future

Lately, big-budget science fiction films have been the most consistently successful movies at the box office. While Avengers: Endgame is a prime example, films like Avatar and its sequel, along with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies, have also earned huge amounts of money. However, the surprising success of Zootopia 2 in China suggests a potential change in which types of movies are expected to be the biggest earners each year.
While the popularity of the first Zootopia certainly helped launch the sequel, Zootopia 2‘s success in China is particularly noteworthy. It shows that Western animated films can perform very well in Asian markets. Though audiences may not consciously notice it as much, the fact that animated films are dubbed into other languages could be a factor in Zootopia 2‘s Chinese success. However, the bigger takeaway is the potential for future animated films in Asia.
The strong performance of Zootopia 2 in China could signal a change in how Hollywood films do business internationally. Historically, American movies have had mixed results in China, as cultural differences and a lack of star power sometimes hinder their success. However, Zootopia 2 has defied this pattern. It’s too early to tell if this is a lasting trend, but Disney’s recent success in China is definitely noteworthy.
