It’s common for movies to be getting longer, and audiences seem to have accepted that they’ll be spending a significant amount of time in the theater. The recent film Avatar: Fire and Ash demonstrated this, with a runtime exceeding three and a half hours including trailers. Now, fans are already discussing how long the next Marvel film, Avengers: Doomsday, will be, even though it’s still being filmed. There’s also early speculation about Secret Wars, which hasn’t even started production yet.
As a film buff, I’m already looking ahead to 2026, and it seems like we’re going to see even more really long movies – seriously, some could be as long as a football game! Everyone’s talking about Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Odyssey and Dune Part Three as likely contenders for that title. But right now, it’s Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary that’s really got people wondering if they’ll need to buy the biggest soda possible when it hits theaters this March – it’s shaping up to be a long one!
Project Hail Mary’s Runtime Revealed (And It’s Long)

Online listings for the upcoming movie Project Hail Mary at Yosemite Cinema suggest it will be quite long. While the studio hasn’t confirmed it, the listed runtime is 2 hours and 46 minutes. If true, this would make it Ryan Gosling’s longest film, exceeding Blade Runner 2049 by two minutes. It would also be the longest movie directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, running 54 minutes longer than their previous longest film, 22 Jump Street.
If you enjoyed Weir’s previous movies like The Martian, you’ll find Project Hail Mary is a bit longer – about 25 minutes, in fact. Those familiar with the books will know this makes sense, as the novel Project Hail Mary is significantly longer than The Martian by over 100 pages. The movie has more story to tell thanks to the book’s unique structure and a surprising character. So, the film’s length shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Whether Project Hail Mary will be a box office success remains to be seen, but the film has several advantages. Ryan Gosling consistently attracts audiences, and the directing duo Lord & Miller have a strong track record of turning unlikely projects into hits, like the Jump Street remakes and The LEGO Movie. They also produced the acclaimed Spider-Verse films. Plus, the movie is based on a novel by the author of The Martian, which should appeal to many viewers. If reviews are good, audiences will likely feel they’re getting a lot of entertainment for their money, further boosting its chances.
