Okay, so just to be super clear, Resident Evil Requiem isn’t going to be an open-world game. The producer, Masato Kumazawa, confirmed that to GameSpot. It’s been confusing though, because there were whispers about Leon having bigger areas to explore and needing a vehicle to get around. And get this – Capcom is actually working with Porsche on a custom Cayenne Turbo GT that Leon will be driving! It’s a bit weird, right? I’m still trying to figure out how all that fits together.
Kumazawa explained that this game is taking a new approach compared to their past work. Game director Koshi Nakanishi added that the gameplay for Grace feels similar to Resident Evil 2, while the character Leon plays more like he does in Resident Evil 4. However, the technology behind the game is particularly interesting and unique.
Nakanishi explained that the game’s technical aspects, characters, and environments build on the lessons learned from Resident Evil 7 and 8. The team aimed to improve upon the gameplay established in Resident Evil 2 and 4, and also incorporated artistic and expressive techniques developed during the creation of Resident Evil 7 and 8.
While Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village aren’t fully open-world games, their locations are connected, and they both feature central hubs that tie everything together. Is the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem likely to follow a similar design approach?
I’ve been hearing all these rumors about Leon exploring areas outside the city, and honestly, I think it’s totally possible! But I’m really curious about what will act as the main base of operations. Maybe instead of one base, we’ll have a few different locations connected together in this bigger world. It makes sense, right? Raccoon City isn’t the only place – we already know about the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center and Victor Gideon hiding out there, so there’s definitely more to explore.
The new game, Resident Evil Requiem, will be available on February 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. You can find all the details we have about it here.
