How Rey’s New Star Wars Movie Is Affected by Kathleen Kennedy’s Exit Explained by Daisy Ridley

Two years ago, Lucasfilm announced plans for a series of Star Wars films focused on Daisy Ridley’s character, Rey, and a ‘New Jedi Order.’ However, none of those films moved forward under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, who recently stepped down as president. Now, with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan taking over as co-presidents, the future of Star Wars appears to be changing course. Kennedy recently provided an update on six planned Star Wars movies, but notably didn’t mention the Rey-centered film.

Honestly, everyone was pretty much expecting Kennedy to move on, and USAToday actually asked Ridley about it way back in December 2025. She played it cool, saying it wouldn’t change things for her. She seemed amused by all the speculation, and even hinted that keeping things under wraps was a good thing. She basically said it’ll be a fantastic surprise when the movie finally drops, and I’m totally here for that! It’s fun when projects stay a little mysterious.

Lucasfilm Need to Get Rey’s Return Right

There’s a lot riding on Daisy Ridley’s upcoming “New Jedi Order” film, and she’s repeatedly said the studio is carefully developing it. While The Mandalorian & Grogu will bring Star Wars back to theaters in May, many feel the franchise will truly relaunch with Star Wars: Starfighter next year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary. The studio appears to be aiming for a yearly Star Wars movie release, leading to rumors that Rey will return in 2028. If that’s the plan, we should hear more news soon.

Daisy Ridley was initially attached to a movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, but there haven’t been many updates about that project recently. Currently, many believe Ridley will appear as a mentor figure in Simon Kinberg’s planned Star Wars trilogy, guiding a new group of Jedi, though this isn’t confirmed. Kathleen Kennedy has stated that Lucasfilm is expecting another draft of the script from Kinberg in March, and fans are eagerly awaiting it.

Daisy Ridley doesn’t seem eager to jump into another Star Wars film right away. When asked by USAToday if any news about a potential movie would come this year, she gave a vague answer, simply saying, “Maybe.” She added that she’s unsure about 2026, but open to the possibility “sometime in the future.” Ridley has stated before that she wants to wait until the script is absolutely right, and she’s still holding firm to that idea.
