Chrissy Teigen Shares She’s 52 Days Sober After Going Back to Alcohol

Chrissy Teigen is sobering up.

The judge from Star Search has been open about her struggles with alcohol. She stopped drinking in 2021, but later admitted to starting again. On January 27th, she shared that she’s been sober for 52 days.

Chrissy, who shares four children with her husband John Legend, recently revealed she started drinking again after being sober for over a year. In an Instagram post, she explained she’d told herself she would drink responsibly—enjoying a glass of wine with her husband on date nights or making a toast at birthdays.

Honestly, it started so innocently. She admitted it began as just one drink with dinner, but things quickly spiraled. She described it as her ‘first problem’ – what started as a single evening drink kept creeping earlier and earlier. It went from 6pm, then 5, then 4, and eventually she was thinking, ‘Oh, what the heck, it’s lunchtime, why not?’ It’s a pattern I’ve seen before, and it’s scary how quickly it can escalate.

Chrissy remembered thinking, “Oh no, here we go again,” around 11am. She said she felt terrible.

Chrissy Teigen, author of the Cravings cookbook, firmly refused to participate in the new show Star Search unless one condition was met. She stated that she wouldn’t appear on the show if alcohol was provided in her dressing room.

Chrissy explained that getting sober this time feels different than before. “The first time, it felt really positive and motivating – that energy helped me stay on track,” she said. “But this time around, I’m not so sure.”

She described her relationship with alcohol like an on-again, off-again romance – one where you complain about your partner to friends, but keep going back. She wondered if people eventually lose patience with your behavior, if you lose faith in yourself, or if it’s a combination of both.

Regardless, the former Lip Sync Battle host said she now has “no desire to turn back.”

She realized she didn’t need it to be herself. She could still make people laugh, be silly, and feel incredibly anxious – just as much as ever, really. And she could handle everything, even without it.

I listen to Chrissy Teigen’s podcast, Self-Conscious, and she recently shared why she’s so open about everything – the good and the bad – that she goes through. It’s really refreshing to hear her be so honest about her life!

It fills me with pride when someone shares their journey to sobriety, and you can really see the change in them,” she said to Carl Radke, who has also been open about his own experiences with addiction. “It’s inspiring and it encourages others to do the same.

Chrissy recently shared on her podcast, Self-Conscious, that she’s comfortable discussing both the good and bad parts of her life experiences.

Seeing someone share their journey to sobriety and witnessing the positive change in them is incredibly rewarding,” she said to Carl Radke, who has also publicly discussed his own experiences with addiction. “It’s inspiring and encourages others to do the same.

In October 2018, the actor known for American Pie shared on Instagram that he had been sober for one year, marking the occasion with a positive and hopeful message.

He shared that he first attempted to stop drinking and using drugs more than five years ago, realizing his addiction had become overwhelming. He admitted it was a difficult process.

He shared that after a difficult journey, he’s been sober for a year, and he’s incredibly proud of that accomplishment. He encouraged anyone who is struggling with addiction to seek help, reminding them that there’s no shame in asking and that recovery is possible.

Looking back on his battle with addiction, he thought about how far he’d gone to keep it a secret.

He shared on his wife Jenny Mollen’s podcast, All the Fails, that he was in therapy, but also struggling with alcohol. He described a cycle where he’d leave a productive therapy session and immediately go buy vodka, drink it to excess, and then drive home. He admitted he used alcohol to disconnect from his feelings and avoid dealing with his life.

He explained that he’d carefully planned how much to drink, wanting to stay coherent enough to talk to me. He mentioned he was constantly swapping out the alcohol bottles at the bar.

The two-time World Cup-winning soccer player has publicly discussed using Adderall improperly while recovering from injuries during her time playing college soccer.

She shared on the 2025 podcast Question Everything with Danielle Robay that she had become seriously addicted to Adderall and was using it in dangerous ways. She explained she was taking it constantly, often going days without sleep. It was a chaotic time, and she felt she was pushing her body to the limit, even fearing a heart attack. She admitted to crushing and snorting the pills, acknowledging how deeply problematic her behavior had become.

However, in the midst of her struggle, her college coach Anson Dorrance was there to support her.

She described a difficult time where she had to adapt to challenging circumstances. Anson encouraged her to read, and she found a book called Man’s Search for Meaning that profoundly impacted her. The book dealt with finding purpose even in suffering, and ultimately changed her perspective on life.

In October 2025, Migos member Quavo revealed he had been sober from codeine—an opioid often mixed with soda to create the drink known as sizzurp—for four years. He credited a serious conversation with his teenage son, Jordan, as the turning point that led him to get clean.

Offset shared a touching story on the show Baby, This Is Keke Palmer about his son repeatedly asking for pineapple Fanta, even though he rarely drinks soda. What really got to Offset was when his son noticed his own drink looked different and asked why, which he found incredibly emotional.

Offset explained that the seemingly harmless comment really upset him, adding, “I almost cried when I went back to my room.”

The rapper explained he felt guilty as a father. He was worried his son didn’t realize he was using drugs and was especially concerned about unintentionally influencing him, even in small ways – like the son wanting the same soda. It made him think, ‘Oh no, am I setting a bad example?’

The Academy Award-winning actor has often openly discussed December 29, 1975, the date he stopped drinking.

In an October 2025 interview on The New York Times‘ podcast, The Interview, he admitted to driving drunk in California while essentially unconscious from intoxication. He described having no idea where he was going and then realizing the danger he posed to others – and himself, which he said he didn’t care about at the time – leading him to recognize he had a problem with alcohol.

With support from a friend, he started a journey of recovery. In December 2025, he celebrated 50 years of sobriety, sharing a message of hope for others who are struggling like he once did.

I always tell people, choose to embrace life fully! It sounds simple, but it’s so powerful. When things get tough, actively choose living – really living! It’s about saying ‘yes’ to experiences, joy, and everything that makes you feel truly alive. I often remind myself and others to just…live, live, live and ask for more of it!

The Valley star shared his decades-long battle with drugs in March 2025 after going to rehab.

Jax revealed on the March 4th episode of Bravo’s Hot Mic podcast that he’s struggling with addiction, specifically with cocaine. He admitted it was difficult to talk about.

He explained that he’s struggled with this issue intermittently since he was 23, and now, at 45, it continues to come and go. He’d sometimes stop the behavior, but other times engage in it intensely.

Jax stopped drinking as part of getting sober. He clarified he didn’t believe he had a serious alcohol issue, but realized his drinking and cocaine use were connected – he couldn’t use cocaine without drinking alcohol. Because of this, he quit both. He shared that he was proud to have been sober for 82 or 83 days, which was the longest stretch of sobriety he’d ever experienced.

Tom Holland, known for his role as Spider-Man, quit drinking in 2022 because he felt controlled by alcohol. He admitted on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast that he was addicted, saying, “I was definitely addicted to alcohol, not shying away from that at all.” He believes that even having a beer every day could indicate a problem.

The actor explained that you eventually reach a point where you regret having that extra drink. This usually results in a bad headache the next morning.

After changing his lifestyle, Holland found he was sleeping more soundly and coping with challenges more effectively.

Honestly, I was so impressed with how he handled things. Normally, even small problems on set would really bother him, but he was just taking everything in stride. He told me he felt so much more mentally clear, and he was genuinely healthier and fitter too. It was amazing to see.

Sean Connery, famous for his role in Hunt for Red October, rarely discusses his recovery from alcohol addiction, which started nearly four decades ago.

He revealed in a May 2024 podcast that he doesn’t often talk about his sobriety, only bringing it up when relevant. He shared that he’s been sober for 39 years, since February 23, 1985.

Alec described a difficult period following his move to Los Angeles in 1983, admitting he struggled with heavy cocaine use for two years. He said cocaine was so prevalent at the time, it felt as common as coffee, and he and others used it constantly.

And after quitting the drug, he soon turned to alcohol—only to also quit that dependency.

Today, he relies on the city around him.

He finds New York City incredibly calming. He loves simply walking around and discovering new details he’s never seen before – like architectural features on familiar buildings. He also enjoys spending time with friends over lunch or coffee.

In April 2024, Anne Hathaway, known for her role in The Princess Diaries, revealed she’s been sober for over five years. She told The New York Times that reaching this point felt like a significant achievement.

She explained her decision simply. “I realized it wasn’t a good fit for me,” she said. “It felt difficult to completely reject it, but I had to be firm. It’s like an allergy – if you have a severe reaction, you don’t try to fight it. I finally stopped questioning my feelings and just accepted it.”

She’s glad she made the change, explaining that things have improved significantly for her. She described her previous state as being stuck in negativity, something she actively avoids.

While receiving the 2018 Woman of the Year Award from the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House—a program helping women recover from addiction—Moore discussed how a damaging lifestyle almost ended her career.

I think we all have key moments that change us and set us on a certain course. Early in my career, I was heading down a really destructive path. Even when I achieved success, I never felt satisfied or worthy. I had very little self-worth, and things quickly spiraled into a crisis. At the time, I didn’t understand why, but it felt like something – maybe fate – intervened.

As someone who’s seen a lot of transformations, I can tell you a little nudge can sometimes be everything. I actually went through a tough time back in 2012 and needed that nudge myself. It was amazing – two people I hadn’t known very long basically told me I needed to get my act together! I joke that they said I had two options: get help, or…well, not! They really gave me the kick in the pants I needed to change direction before I completely lost control of things. I’m incredibly grateful they stepped in and gave me a second chance.

Looking back, it’s amazing how much potential others saw in me, even more than I recognized in myself. I’m incredibly thankful for their belief in me and the chance they gave me – honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.

Miley Cyrus revealed in 2022 that she’s been working on overcoming her Xanax addiction since 2020. She told Rolling Stone that recovery provided much-needed stability during a difficult time. “It gave me something to focus on and prevented me from getting lost in my thoughts,” she explained. “It really gave me hope for the future.”

The singer explained that once they discovered a way to briefly escape their pain, they were finished – meaning they’d reached a point of no return.

She explained that her friends back then seemed to accept her drug use, which contributed to a downward spiral she described as a “dark, bottomless pit.” During the pandemic, Miley Cyrus realized she was struggling and felt disconnected emotionally. She remembered frequently falling asleep and being unable to stay awake, admitting she was deeply affected by her substance use.

She eventually sought help and noted that “it took some time to get on my own two feet.”

In his 2025 documentary, Stans, Eminem opened up about his past struggles with prescription pills. He shared that an overdose and missing his daughter Hailie Jade’s birthday were turning points that led him to change his ways.

Honestly, hearing him talk about it really got to me. He described a moment where he was overcome with emotion, realizing how much he’d been missing out on. He kept pushing himself, almost yelling at himself internally, asking if he really wanted to repeat past mistakes and lose out on life again. He was incredibly hard on himself, even using some pretty harsh language, but it was clear he was doing it all to not let down the people he cared about, even if he couldn’t do it for himself at first.

Focusing on making music again was a key part of the Oscar winner’s recovery from addiction.

He described how it activated a light. More importantly, he said he’d stopped feeling ashamed of being sober. He’d begun to see his sobriety as a strength, something to be proud of, and celebrated his ability to quit.

The actor, known from the show Parenthood, had been sober for 16 years when they experienced a relapse in 2020. This happened after a motorcycle accident led them to take Vicodin.

He explained on his Armchair Expert podcast that he’s been taking prescription medication consistently for about the past two months. He also mentioned he’s taking more than the prescribed amount.

He went on to say he was miserable and felt he had to keep lying to those around him. He knew he needed to stop, but his tolerance was increasing so fast that he was now using eight pills a day. He was terrified of the severe withdrawal he knew would follow, and he was starting to feel incredibly isolated, burdened by a huge secret.

In 2018, the actress best known for her role in Halloween openly discussed her decade-long struggle with opioid addiction. It began in the late 1980s after she had a small cosmetic procedure to address puffy eyes, which led to a life-altering prescription. She told People magazine that she spent ten years stealing and deceiving others, all in secret. “No one knew,” she said. “No one.”

Curtis recalls the summer of 1998 as her lowest point. Her sister arrived with prescription painkillers for a broken rib, and Curtis ended up taking them all. Remembering the event brought her to tears as she described how she knew her sister would discover the missing pills before leaving. She confessed in a note left on the suitcase, and when her sister returned, she embraced Curtis, expressing her love and concern, and stating she couldn’t bear to watch Curtis destroy herself.

Jamie Lee Curtis went to her first support group meeting on February 3, 1999, and on that same day, she told her husband, filmmaker Christopher Guest, about her struggles with addiction. Drew Barrymore, who has previously sought treatment for substance use, revealed in 2021 that she had reached a significant point in her recovery. Speaking on CBS Mornings, she shared that she’d been sober for two and a half years, explaining that alcohol simply wasn’t beneficial to her life.

It’s amazing how freeing and nerve-wracking it feels to finally share who we are, what we believe in, and everything we’ve achieved.

Drew Barrymore told the Los Angeles Times she avoids calling herself “sober” because she doesn’t want to be seen as overly strict or judgmental.

In 2023, she described a shift in her thinking. She used to believe she could eventually learn and overcome the challenge, constantly telling herself, ‘I’ll get it.’ But she eventually came to the realization that mastery wasn’t achievable for her, admitting, ‘I never have, and I never will.’

Oh my god, you won’t BELIEVE what I read about Bradley! Apparently, back in the early 2000s, he was really battling a cocaine addiction. It was so rough! But thankfully, his amazing friend Will Arnett actually confronted him about it. Can you imagine? Will basically stepped in and helped him get things under control. It’s just… so good to know he had someone like Will looking out for him. Seriously, Will Arnett is a hero!

Cooper shared in a 2022 podcast interview that it was the first time he understood he was struggling with drugs and alcohol. He said he could never forget that moment.

Honestly, Arnett basically saved my life. I mean, he was the one who really got through to me and made me realize I needed to get sober. He didn’t shy away from telling me what I needed to hear, even though it was tough. That conversation? It completely changed everything for me, set me on this amazing path to a better life, and I’ll forever be grateful to him for taking that chance and being so honest.

The actor, known for his role in Fight Club, battled alcohol addiction for years until Bradley Cooper helped him get sober. Accepting an award from Cooper at the 2020 National Board of Review Annual Awards, he shared, “I got sober because of this guy, and my life has been better every day since.”

In September 2023, the former Cruel Intentions star revealed on Instagram that they had been without nicotine or marijuana – and other substances – for the longest period since their teenage years.

He expressed gratitude for overcoming addiction and substance dependency, saying that achieving sobriety brings a sense of clarity and a deeper spiritual connection, which feels truly good.

In 2018, the singer openly celebrated six years of being sober while on tour. However, she surprised fans later that year with her song “Sober,” which honestly shared that she had experienced a relapse.

She sang, filled with regret, apologizing to her parents for losing control and drinking. She also expressed gratitude to those who had stuck by her, acknowledging this wasn’t the first time she’d found herself in this situation, repeating her sorrow for not being sober.

A month later, Lovato was hospitalized for a near-fatal overdose.

She shared on Instagram a couple of weeks ago that she’s been open about her struggles with addiction. She explained that it’s an ongoing battle, not something she’s simply overcome. She needs to prioritize her healing and recovery, and is incredibly grateful for the support she’s received. She’s hopeful for the future and determined to continue fighting for her sobriety.

In 2018, she spoke about her struggles with sex and alcohol addiction. She explained that her addictions would shift over time, and when she was younger, she believed sex could solve any problem. She then described realizing she was developing a serious issue with drinking.

I’ll never forget hitting a really low point. I was home alone and had already finished two bottles of wine, and was actually reaching for a third. That’s when it hit me – I was by myself, about to open another bottle, and I realized I might have a serious issue. It was a wake-up call, honestly.

I just stopped completely. That’s something I’m able to do – I can quit things cold turkey. I tend to get really fixated on things, so I always have to be mindful of my habits. It’s not necessarily what you’re doing, but how and why you’re doing it. It’s the underlying behavior that matters. For example, enjoying a lot of sex is fine, but you need to understand why you’re seeking it out. That’s the important part to consider.

Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean revealed he first experimented with drugs before filming the music video for their 2000 hit, “The Call.” He later told Good Morning America that he was “completely out of control” during the video shoot. After a setback, he achieved sobriety in 2021. Within a year, he experienced significant improvements in his health, including losing 32 pounds in seven months by giving up alcohol and fast food.

He told People magazine in July 2025 that he’s committed to staying on his current path. He described it as a daily effort, but said he’s finally taken advice from the recovery community, which has dramatically improved his life.

While AJ acknowledged he is “still learning, still growing,” he’s now confident in who he is.

I’ve been learning to set personal boundaries, which is something I never did before. It’s really helpful. ‘AJ’ is a stage name or character I use, but it doesn’t represent who I truly am. My real name is Alexander James, and that’s who I am as a person.

Following the unexpected death of Mac Miller, rapper Bow Wow—born Shad Moss—revealed on Twitter that he had previously battled an addiction to cough syrup, often called “lean.” He shared a candid account of his struggle, explaining that during the creation of his “FACE OFF” album with Omarion, he was using lean daily. He admitted to being high on the substance during a well-known on-stage incident with Torae on BET, and that it negatively impacted his attitude, his fans’ perception of him, and his relationships with family. Despite never mentioning lean in his music, he was heavily addicted, consuming it at least seven times a day during his UCP tour with Chris Brown. He experienced severe withdrawal symptoms after collapsing backstage at a show in Cincinnati, landing him in the hospital.

Bow Wow described the withdrawal pain as unlike anything he’d ever felt, leaving him constantly cold even in summer. He missed shows in Chicago and Baltimore due to being high and sick, and now regrets using drugs to appear cool. He urged young people to avoid drugs, to be good children, and to strive to be their best selves, promising to speak out more on the issue. He emphasized the importance of protecting youth and helping them avoid early deaths, and asked parents to talk to their children about the dangers of drugs. He shared that he almost died from his syrup use.

Bow Wow concluded by saying that he still suffers from stomach problems as a result of his addiction, and that staying drug-free is the best path. He pleaded with his fans, especially young artists, to avoid following trends and to break the cycle of drug use, emphasizing the need to save young lives and promote a healthy future.

In 2018, the singer opened up about her struggles with addiction alongside the release of her album No Shame and her memoir My Thoughts Exactly. She revealed she had been heavily using cocaine and drinking excessively. Things came to a head when, after accidentally hitting Orlando Bloom with her head at Kate Hudson’s Halloween party and knocking herself unconscious, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin intervened to help her.

In an interview with The Guardian, she described feeling deeply unfulfilled. She recalled a particularly low point, saying she even considered trying heroin because nothing else seemed to offer any relief.

The actor known for The Parent Trap struggled with cocaine addiction during the 1980s, eventually entering rehab in 1990. He later shared on Today that he came of age in the 1960s and 70s, a time when attitudes toward drug use were very different.

He confessed that in the 1980s, he was using cocaine almost every day, even to the point where it impacted his finances. He described desperately pleading with God to help him stop, often right before work, only to find himself rationalizing his addiction just hours later, thinking it wasn’t a serious problem.

He described a powerful experience, what he called seeing a white light, where he felt like he was either dying or losing everything important in his life. He then had to explain this to his then-fiancée, Meg Ryan, and afterwards, he decided to get help. This marked the end of his struggle with cocaine.

Following an incident at a Newport Beach hotel where he attempted to break down his own door, Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte began treatment for alcohol addiction in 2018. A representative for Lochte stated that he had been struggling with addiction for years, and it had become a harmful cycle. Lochte recognized his need for professional help and immediately sought treatment.

According to a recent statement, Ryan understands that overcoming this illness is crucial – not only to prevent future regrets, but also to be a good husband and father, and to have a chance at competing in his fifth Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 and reclaiming his place as a top swimmer.

Despite knowing you shouldn’t get sober for another person, actor Jason Ritter credits his relationship with Melanie Lynskey as a significant factor in his decision to stop drinking.

He realized how wonderful she was and believed she deserved someone truly special. Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show in March 2023, he admitted he didn’t feel up to the task, saying he felt ‘a little bit too crazy’ to be with her.

However, as Ritter noted to TopMob News, he now sees that sobriety is ultimately a personal choice.

He remembers that early in their relationship, it was simpler to justify his actions by saying he was doing them for her. He admits he didn’t value his own well-being much at the time and was more concerned with protecting her feelings than his own. Initially, framing things as being ‘for her’ felt easier. Now, he’s finally prioritizing his own needs and doing things for himself.

The country singer has been sober for almost ten years, but reaching this point was a difficult journey. His struggle with alcohol and painkillers started shortly after high school and continued even as his career gained momentum. He confessed to People magazine that he always kept a black leather laptop bag nearby, filled with bottles of Jagermeister or vodka, and would drink “every hour and a half to two hours.” He also admitted to taking a pill or two every three to four hours.

Despite the challenges, it didn’t hinder his achievements. “I wasn’t falling apart,” he explained. “Actually, I was incredibly productive – I wrote more songs during that time than I do today, and that’s what really worried me.”

In late 2011, he was hospitalized with pancreatitis and warned that his life was in danger if he didn’t stop drinking. He admitted he initially tried to cut back on his own, setting small goals like limiting himself to a certain number of pills or amount of alcohol each day, even marking bottles to track his progress. However, he found it difficult to maintain, saying that a social event would often derail his efforts after a couple of days.

Gilbert finally decided he needed help and checked into rehab on December 18, 2011. He explained, “I realized I couldn’t overcome this on my own.” He admitted it was frustrating and humiliating, especially because he considered himself a strong-willed person, but he just couldn’t seem to break the cycle.
