The audience score for the new Marvel series is in, and it’s performing well, even surpassing some other popular titles within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All eight episodes, created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, became available on Disney+ on January 27th.
Following Ironheart last summer, the newest Marvel live-action series, Wonder Man, is proving popular with viewers. It currently has an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 90% approval rating from critics.
With a Popcornmeter score of 89%, Wonder Man is one of the best-received MCU shows so far. It scored higher than WandaVision, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, and Loki, all of which received 88%. Only a few titles have performed better: Daredevil (89%), Agents of Shield (91%), and the animated X-Men ’97 (91%).
The new Marvel movie stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an actor in Hollywood who suddenly gains superpowers. The film also features a strong supporting cast including Ben Kingsley, Joe Pantoliano, Arian Moayed, X Mayo, Josh Gad, and Zlatko Burić.
Reviews for Wonder Man generally appreciate its shift away from the typical, large-scale conflicts seen in other Marvel shows. Many viewers find the story more relatable and engaging because of its focus on smaller, more personal stakes. Critics have also praised the strong performances and believable connection between Abdul Mateen II and Kingsley.
Marvel is starting the year with a new show on Disney+, followed by the second season of Daredevil: Born Again in March and VisionQuest sometime in 2026. On the movie side, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the big summer hit in July, leading up to the highly awaited Avengers: Doomsday in December.
Compared to popular MCU shows like Loki, Wonder Man may not attract as many viewers. This release also comes at a time when overall interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be declining, as evidenced by the underwhelming box office performance of The Fantastic Four: First Steps last year.
Look, the critics are still out, but the audience seems to really be enjoying “Wonder Man.” I’ve been seeing a lot of positive buzz about all eight episodes. It’s too early to say exactly how Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character will play into the bigger Marvel picture – Phase 6 and beyond – but based on the initial reaction, he’s definitely making a strong impression right out of the gate.
