New MCU Phase 7 Rumor Means It Can Finally Do The Marvel Story Everyone’s Wanted For 12 Years

A new rumor suggests Marvel might bring back a fan-favorite character in Phase 7, potentially delivering a storyline viewers have been hoping for over a decade. Wanda Maximoff first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014, briefly in Captain America: The Winter Soldier with her brother Quicksilver, and then more prominently in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Initially an antagonist, she joined the Avengers team, but tragically lost her brother. She went on to appear in three more MCU films before leading her own Disney+ series, WandaVision. Ultimately, as the Scarlet Witch, she became a villain and seemingly died in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, characters rarely remain dead for long. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Marvel is reportedly developing a Scarlet Witch movie planned for Phase 7, which could open the door to adapting a well-known storyline from the comics.

Scarlet Witch Rumored for Phase 7 MCU Movie

It’s not surprising to hear rumors of a Scarlet Witch movie. In Marvel comics, characters rarely stay dead, and the ending of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness didn’t actually show Wanda’s body. She destroyed the Darkhold and sacrificed herself, but without a confirmed death, fans assume she could return.

It’s likely that characters who have died in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will return in Avengers: Secret Wars and the stories that follow. The film is expected to bring together heroes from across the multiverse, potentially introducing an alternate version of Wanda Maximoff. Whether the original Scarlet Witch returns or a new one appears, it always seemed the MCU intended to bring the character back at some point.

We might see these events unfold as early as this summer with the upcoming series, VisionQuest. The show will pick up after Vision’s departure at the end of WandaVision and reintroduce Tommy (Speed), Wanda and Vision’s son from that series, now as a grown-up. This miniseries is intended to conclude a three-part story that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along, which brought back Billy (Wiccan), Wanda and Vision’s other son. Fans can anticipate that this series will at least suggest the eventual return of Scarlet Witch.

Could the MCU Be Planning House of M?

The big question is what kind of story a Scarlet Witch movie will tell. While many compelling storylines exist in the comics, a lot of them portray Wanda in a negative light, repeatedly focusing on her mental health and having her act as a villain. However, House of M stands out as a strong story that could work well as a standalone film.

The X-Men are expected to take center stage in the seventh phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If they debut first, a storyline involving Wanda Maximoff and the ‘House of M’ could be a great way to introduce even more mutants. This event, where Wanda creates a seemingly perfect world ruled by her family, would naturally lead to a larger mutant population within the MCU as the story unfolds. The plot centers around Wolverine, who remembers the original reality and attempts to fix what Wanda has done.

The main challenge with adapting the House of M storyline is that WandaVision already covered similar ground. Both stories center around Wanda creating a seemingly idyllic reality, but one that’s maintained through her power, not genuine happiness. Because of this, it’s unlikely the new Scarlet Witch movie will directly adapt House of M, as it would essentially have Wanda repeat a story arc she’s already experienced.

A compelling storyline for Scarlet Witch would revisit her past, before she became Sorceress Supreme. Imagine her running a metaphysical shop called the Emporium, with Darcy Lewis as an employee. The shop would feature a mysterious “Last Door” that people in dire need could find, leading them to Wanda for help. This setup could allow Scarlet Witch to re-establish herself as a hero and finally earn redemption within the MCU.
