Arnold Schwarzenegger continues to express interest in a follow-up to his 1982 film “Conan the Barbarian.” Recently reflecting on his career, especially with his Netflix series “FUBAR” featuring numerous nods to previous roles, Schwarzenegger mentioned during an interview with Collider promoting “FUBAR” Season 2 that several of his most successful films could benefit from sequels, such as “Conan.” However, the current state of potential “Conan” adaptations does not seem promising. It remains unclear whether Schwarzenegger intends to reprise his role, contribute in another capacity, or simply watch as a fan.
Occasionally, I find myself yearning for additional ‘Conan’ films, as I believe with the right director and script, we could create an exceptional franchise continuing the story of King Conan. In other words, it’s not impossible to imagine more movies in this series.
The character of Conan the Barbarian originated from short stories and novels as early as 1931. However, it was Arnold Schwarzenegger who brought him to life on screen for the first time in the 1982 movie adaptation directed by John Milius, who collaborated with Oliver Stone on the script. Schwarzenegger reappeared as Conan in the 1984 film “Conan the Destroyer,” and was set to return for a third installment titled “Conan the Conqueror.” Unfortunately, that movie was postponed several times and eventually evolved into the 1997 film “Kull the Conqueror.
Since his initial appearance, Conan has been brought to life on screen multiple times, and he remains popular in novels, comic books, and video games. In 2011, Jason Momoa starred in a new movie adaptation of Conan the Barbarian. Additionally, there were two animated series and one live-action series based on the character during the 1990s. As of 2020, discussions about a new Conan adaptation have surfaced on Netflix or Prime Video, but these plans appear to have stalled for now.
In a twist of events hinted by Schwarzenegger, there were whispers back in 2012 about him stepping into the boots of Conan once more. The charge was led by producers Chris Morgan and Frederick Malmberg, with Andrea Berloff penning the script for this potential comeback. For years, I’ve eagerly awaited updates on this project from Schwarzenegger himself in various interviews. However, in 2017, Morgan revealed that Universal had ultimately shelved the movie.
Should Arnold Schwarzenegger remain passionate about the project, there’s no question that it might yet come to fruition someday. Until then, enthusiasts can find him in the latest season of FUBAR, which is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
