Season 4 is now available, and like last year’s Season 3, it will be released in two parts. The first four episodes are streaming today, and the remaining episodes will be available on February 26th. Fans are already familiar with this popular series, which continues to follow the love stories of the Bridgerton family.
Although Benedict Bridgerton’s love story is the third in the Bridgerton novels (titled An Offer From A Gentleman), the Netflix series decided to tell Colin and Penelope’s story in Season 3 instead. Because of this, fans have been eagerly anticipating Benedict’s romance ever since last year – he’s been a popular character since the very first season! The first part of Season 4 left Benedict and Sophie’s storyline feeling uncertain and a little sad.
Bridgerton Season 4 Sets Up a Cinderella-esque Love Story
As a huge fan, I was immediately back in the world of Bridgerton with everyone preparing for another exciting marriage season! This time, instead of Lady Danbury hosting the kickoff ball, it’s happening at the Bridgerton estate. Seeing Violet Bridgerton get everything ready for all the eligible bachelors, debutantes, and, of course, Queen Charlotte, felt familiar, but there’s definitely something new happening this season – a key change that really caught my attention.
In the past, Bridgerton mainly showed life among the upper class, only briefly touching on the lives of servants and those outside of noble society – like Siena Rosso in Season 1, who could have been used more. This season, however, the show took a closer look at the staff at Bridgerton House and how important they are to keeping everything running smoothly.
Benedict is caught by his mother in a compromising situation with two women just as she’s urging him to find a suitable wife and attend her ball. Like in the first three seasons of Bridgerton, Benedict is considered a “rake” – a wealthy man who freely enjoys a life of pleasure without wanting to commit. While mothers in high society would normally avoid such a man, his position as a Bridgerton son makes him a desirable match despite his reputation.
The household, still full of life with several married couples and their children, prepares for a masquerade ball. Meanwhile, a new and enigmatic young woman arrives, stepping into her carriage. She’s dressed entirely in silver with a mask concealing most of her face, and it’s clear she isn’t from royalty, despite her regal appearance. Her driver warns her to return by midnight, the time when everyone at the ball will reveal their identities – a plot point very similar to the story of Cinderella.
A magical evening for her is disrupted when Benedict arrives late, distracted by all the young women hoping for his attention. He quickly singles her out—she’s the only one who doesn’t seem to know who he is. They sneak away for dance lessons and a private conversation, culminating in a passionate kiss. As midnight approaches, she rushes away, leaving a satin glove behind as a reminder of their encounter.
It’s quickly discovered that the mysterious young woman is actually Sophie Baek, a simple maid employed by the Penwood family—a cold mother, Araminta, and her two daughters, Posy and Rosamund. We learn through flashbacks that Sophie was the daughter of the late Lord Penwood, but after his death, her stepmother and stepsisters forced her to work as a servant without any pay or appreciation. She made a spur-of-the-moment decision to attend the ball, but Araminta soon discovers her secret night out.
Benedict is completely captivated by the mysterious Lady in Silver and, despite previously rejecting marriage, enlists Penelope and Eloise—with the help of Lady Whistledown—to find her. He puts up with endless matchmaking attempts from hopeful mothers and daughters, all while remaining hopelessly in love. Simultaneously, Araminta cruelly evicts Sophie from her home, leaving her with nothing. Discouraged, Benedict abandons his search and retreats to the countryside to drink his sorrows away, but fate seems to have other plans for both Sophie and him.
Sophie Leaves Benedict at the End of Bridgerton Season 4, Part 1?
Benedict doesn’t have to wait long to see Sophie again, but their reunion is far from ideal. While having a gloomy drink with some fellow nobles, he witnesses them harassing a young maid. Despite his own reputation as a bit of a rogue, Benedict can’t stand seeing a woman treated with such disrespect. He intervenes in a fight to protect Sophie, but the situation escalates, costing Sophie her job and leaving Benedict with a cut on his side. They’re then forced to seek shelter together during a dangerous thunderstorm.
Fortunately, Benedict finds refuge in a nearby cottage, which also allows him and Sophie to grow closer as he battles a severe infection and high fever. Though Sophie feels strangely familiar, he doesn’t recognize her as the mysterious woman he’s been admiring, likely because she works as a maid rather than a noblewoman. Despite treating her as a guest and sharing a kiss, the difference in their social standing is always present. Their time in the countryside concludes with a return to London, where Benedict secures Sophie a position at Bridgerton House.
Despite his efforts to focus on finding the mysterious Lady in Silver among London’s noblewomen, Benedict finds himself repeatedly drawn back to Sophie. As seen in Season 4, Episode 4, “An Offer from a Gentleman,” he begins to realize that his connection with Sophie is more appealing than pursuing a fleeting memory from the masquerade.
Sophie and Benedict finally shared a passionate kiss after weeks of tension. Afterwards, Benedict confessed his feelings and promised Sophie everything, but then shockingly asked her to be his mistress. Sophie, who had been thrilled by his declaration of love, was clearly hurt and walked away without saying a word, leaving some viewers puzzled by her reaction.
During the Regency era, social standing was extremely important. While wealthy noblemen like Benedict often had relationships with women from lower social classes – such as actresses or household staff – they were not allowed to marry them. Instead, these men would take these women as mistresses, providing for their comfort and well-being, but denying them the legal status of wife. This practice was based on strict social classes and ultimately served to maintain the power and privilege of the men involved.
Married men weren’t supposed to abandon their wives, but a man’s mistress had no legal protection. Benedict could marry someone from the upper class and end his affair without any responsibility to his mistress. This unfair rule kept women from improving their social status and reinforced the idea that women from lower classes weren’t considered suitable wives for noblemen.
Sophie had believed Benedict, with all his talk of being rebellious and different, would defy societal expectations and marry her. Instead, he turned out to be as timid as everyone else. His offer to take her as a mistress, though he saw it as a generous act, deeply humiliated her. Because of this, she left him and went back to her friends, the other servants, as they headed to the taverns for the evening.
Who Are The Bridgertons’ New Neighbors?
The brief romantic encounter between Sophie and Benedict didn’t lead anywhere, but the end of the episode was filled with suspense. Lady Alice Mondrich had hinted at new neighbors moving in, and the final scene revealed their identities: the Penwoods – Araminta, Posy, and Rosamund – in a surprising and unsettling reveal.
Sophie was very close to Benedict, Eloise, and Hyacinth Bridgerton, but she kept her connection to Araminta a secret. Araminta had not only embarrassed Sophie but also ruined her reputation, making it almost impossible to find work in polite society. If Araminta discovered Sophie was now associated with the Bridgertons, she would undoubtedly try to destroy Sophie’s reputation, potentially causing Benedict to end their relationship.
Sophie was just beginning to rebuild her life after Araminta left her with nothing, and having her nearby again was sure to cause problems. But this situation could also reveal Sophie’s noble background, potentially making her a more suitable match for Benedict. We’ll have to wait for the second part of Bridgerton Season 4 to find out what happens.
