The 2010s were a fantastic decade for science fiction movies, with films like Interstellar and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes leading the way. The decade brought us some truly memorable and highly praised sci-fi films, many of which were also big hits with audiences. It also included a few lesser-known treasures, and one particularly good one is unfortunately leaving Peacock soon.
If you’re a Peacock subscriber hoping to watch the 2019 sci-fi film Ad Astra, starring Brad Pitt, you don’t have much time left. Pitt plays astronaut Roy McBride, who travels to the far reaches of space to find his father and investigate a dangerous energy surge. The movie, which earned over $135 million globally, became available on Peacock on January 1st, but it appears it will only be available for a month. It’s already listed as leaving soon, so it will likely be removed from the streaming service at the end of January.
Ad Astra Is a Slow-Burn Odyssey Across Space and the Human Psyche
Ad Astra stands out in the science fiction genre by offering a more thoughtful and realistic take on space travel, moving away from the typical action and fantasy. It’s reminiscent of a slower-paced Interstellar, but instead of focusing on exploring new planets or fighting aliens, the film delves into the inner journey of its protagonist, McBride. The vastness of space provides a beautiful setting for an exploration of themes like masculinity, emotional distance, and loneliness. Though it includes exciting action sequences, such as a chase on the moon and a fight in zero gravity, Ad Astra is fundamentally about McBride’s personal struggle to reconnect with his father.
While not everyone loved its deliberate, thoughtful style, Ad Astra is a beautifully made and ultimately rewarding film – many consider it a hidden gem in the sci-fi genre. Though it received a lukewarm response from general audiences, critics overwhelmingly praised the movie, giving it an 83% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film stands out for its stunning and realistic visuals, Brad Pitt’s compelling performance, and its insightful exploration of a character’s inner life against the backdrop of a grand space adventure.
Where to Stream Ad Astra After It Leaves Peacock?
It’s unclear where the movie Ad Astra will be available after it’s removed from Peacock. It hasn’t been announced on any of the major streaming services’ February 2026 schedules, and right now, Peacock is the only place to watch it online. While it seems likely the movie will temporarily leave streaming, fans will still be able to rent or buy it digitally. It might also become available on streaming again in the future.
