The popular video game series God of War is becoming a live-action TV show, and Amazon MGM Studios is assembling a talented cast. Ryan Hurst has already been cast as the main character, Kratos, and now the show has announced who will play Odin, the powerful All-Father. The role will be played by an Emmy Award-winning actor known for the show Homeland.
Amazon MGM Studios announced that Mandy Patinkin, an Emmy Award-winning actor, will play Odin. He’s a perfect fit for the role, consistently delivering powerful performances in a variety of shows and films, including Homeland, Criminal Minds, Brilliant Minds, and the classic The Princess Bride. Now, he’ll bring that same talent and depth to the world of the God of War.
The God of War Live-Action Cast Is Stacked (And Is Setting Up The Show For Success)

The God of War games are beloved for their exciting action, compelling story, and especially their incredible acting. The live-action series has continued this tradition with strong casting choices, and bringing Patinkin on board is another great example.
Amazon MGM has revealed details about Odin’s character in the upcoming series. While he doesn’t appear physically strong or godlike, Odin is actually the most powerful of the Aesir gods. He’s a strict and commanding leader, constantly searching for knowledge. Driven by a fear of Ragnarök—the Norse apocalypse—Odin will resort to manipulation and extreme measures to try and prevent it, making him a powerful and challenging opponent for Kratos.
Fans are excited about Ryan Hurst being cast as Kratos, believing he’ll perfectly portray the character in live-action. While Hurst is confirmed as Kratos, casting for his son, Atreus – who shares the leading role – is still underway, as the series will continue the story from the previous two games.
The show has recently added Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor. Parker is known for his roles in shows like Emmerdale Farm and Doctor Who, and will play Odin’s son, who is also one of the show’s villains. Palmer has appeared in Lights Out and The Fall Guy. Like Heimdall, Sif doesn’t become a major character until God of War: Ragnarok, suggesting the show is drawing heavily from the sequel’s storyline.
Alongside the main villain, Thor will also be a key antagonist in Ragnarok, portrayed by Ólafsson. He has a much larger role in this sequel compared to the first game in 2018. Ólafsson is known for his work on shows like Reykjavik Fusion, Trapped, and the recent hit Severance, and he’s expected to perfectly capture the intensity of the powerful Norse God when God of War comes to television. The cast is already shaping up to be fantastic, and this feels like only the beginning – it has the potential to be one of Prime Video’s best adaptations so far.
God of War currently has no release date.
