David Mitchell teases Ludwig season 2 with character’s new role and “brilliant” new cast members

One of the most popular new shows of 2024 was Ludwig, a funny and dramatic detective series on the BBC, featuring David Mitchell.

It’s no surprise the show was renewed for a second season. The new episodes will continue the story right after the events of season one, where Mitchell’s character, John, officially joined the police as a crime consultant. This happened after the team discovered he’d been secretly pretending to be his missing brother, but they decided to keep it a secret.

Mitchell explained that his character’s position on the police team will create some tension in the new episodes. He said viewers will see that not everyone in the force is happy with his being there, leading to a lot of mystery and uncertainty surrounding his role.

He also needs to hide the truth about how he used to solve cases by pretending to be a police officer. If anyone finds out, five murderers could go free, and he’d likely face serious consequences too.

The second season of Ludwig will feature several new characters, with Ben Ashenden and Rumi Sutton joining the cast as the latest additions to the police force.

Mitchell praised the new cast members, describing them as hilarious and brilliant. He noted they’re fresh characters who have great chemistry, but the core storyline hasn’t changed.

Mark Bonnar and Sian Clifford are also new cast members. Bonnar will play Gareth Fisher, a newspaper editor, and Clifford will play Joanne Kemper, a local Member of Parliament.

I think Mitchell is spot on – both actors are truly brilliant! But I especially love Mark Bonnar’s performance. He plays this newspaper editor who’s just wonderfully funny and a bit of a mess, and it’s a perfect role for him.

I don’t want to give away too much about what Sian does,” he explained. “But she has a really interesting part to play, and I loved working with her – I’ve been a fan of her work for a long time.

Now that John doesn’t have to pretend to be his brother anymore, he’s fully embracing his true self – incredibly skilled at puzzles, but struggling with pretty much everything else.

However, John’s twin brother, James, remains missing. Now that John works for the police station, he’s not allowed to use police resources to search for James or find out what James was working on before he disappeared.

John is determined to find his brother James, and Lucy, James’s wife and John’s sister-in-law, is just as committed. They have a mystery to unravel and a family to reunite. While one disguise has been revealed, their search is really just beginning.
