Sci-fi disaster movies are often incredibly exciting because they put us in the middle of huge, world-ending events. From the new ice age in The Day After Tomorrow to the comet threatening Earth in Greenland, these films offer thrilling escapes. However, one movie from the 2010s has faded into obscurity, and viewers on Netflix don’t have much time left to watch it before it potentially disappears from the platform.
Released in 2016, near the end of the popular young adult dystopian thriller trend, The 5th Wave didn’t receive as much attention as hits like The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, and I Am Number Four. The film, adapted from Rick Yancey’s 2013 novel, will be removed from Netflix on February 1st. It stars Chloë Grace Moretz as Cassie Sullivan, a teenager fighting to survive after Earth is attacked in five waves by aliens.
The 5th Wave 2016 Is Perfect for Fans of YA Dystopian Thrillers Like The Hunger Games and Divergent
Okay, let’s talk about The 5th Wave. It’s not groundbreaking, but if you’re into those young adult dystopian thrillers – think The Hunger Games – you’ll probably enjoy it. It hits all the familiar beats: teens surviving in a broken world, questioning the people in charge, and having to fight for themselves. The film really centers on a strong female lead, much like Katniss, who’s forced to take matters into her own hands. It’s a fast-paced story with plenty of action and, naturally, a little romance thrown in for good measure. It’s a solid watch if you’re looking for something in that genre.
While The 5th Wave attempts the young adult adventure genre, it doesn’t quite measure up to the best examples. Critics and audiences didn’t respond well, giving it low scores on Rotten Tomatoes (17% and 38% respectively). The movie feels unoriginal, borrowing heavily from other YA stories and lacking suspense. It also struggles with weak world-building and a rushed pace, cramming the most exciting parts into the first half hour. A predictable teen romance further distracts from the potentially interesting post-apocalyptic setting. However, if you’re looking for a light, enjoyable YA story about the end of the world, The 5th Wave can be a fun, if guilty, pleasure.
