New Intel Suggests Next Gen PlayStation Controllers Will Be A Lot Different

This year marks the sixth year of the PlayStation 5. Considering consoles usually last around seven years, many gamers are eager to hear about the PlayStation 6. While rumors indicate the PS6 might be delayed compared to previous generations – Sony’s current console is still popular, and parts for computers are currently expensive – development is likely underway. Recent information suggests the PS6 could launch with redesigned controllers, potentially looking quite different from the existing DualSense.

Many video game companies, such as Nintendo, have dramatically redesigned their controllers over time. However, Sony has generally stuck with a more consistent approach. While the newest DualSense controller is more streamlined and has extra features, its basic shape and how it works haven’t changed much since the original PlayStation 2 controllers that many players remember. But according to a report from Video Games Chronicle, a newly approved patent suggests PlayStation controllers could be about to get a major redesign.

Sony Patent Reveals Touchscreen Controller Design, And Some Gamers Already Hate It

Sony applied for a patent for a touchscreen gaming controller way back in 2013, but it was only recently approved. Now, gamers are finally seeing what it looks like, and it’s quite unusual! The patent images reveal a controller with a shape similar to what we might expect from the PlayStation 6. However, despite the familiar design, it would function in a very different way.

Instead of standard buttons, this controller would mostly feature a customizable touchscreen. Gamers could design their own button layouts – including the D-pad and joysticks – directly on the screen. This allows for personalized control schemes, letting players adjust button sizes or even remove buttons altogether depending on the game they’re playing.

This feature would give you much more control over how you use your controller. It would be especially helpful for accessibility, allowing players to customize the button layout to best suit their individual needs. You could also adapt the layout for different games – for example, simplifying it for a simple racing game and making it more complex for a fighting game with lots of combinations.

The new controller design isn’t universally popular. After images appeared on Reddit, gamers shared their opinions, and most seem to prefer traditional buttons they can physically press. However, this preference might be due to age, as younger gamers who are used to touchscreens could find a touchscreen controller more intuitive.

The fact that Sony patented this new controller doesn’t guarantee it will be the design for the PS6. Even if it is, Sony might not abandon the current DualSense controller altogether. This new controller could simply be offered as an alternative choice for players who prefer it. Personally, I prefer controllers with physical buttons, and I hope Sony continues to offer the current DualSense design alongside any new options in the next generation.
