When you think of classic sci-fi monster movies, titles like The Blob, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Them!, and Alien often come to mind. But tomorrow, you’ll be able to stream another great one for free on Tubi. It’s a film by David Cronenberg, a master of unsettling science fiction, and it’s definitely worth watching. Like much of his work, it’s filled with intense gore and a uniquely creepy atmosphere, but also has a surprisingly dark and tragic sense of humor, brought to life by incredible performances. It’s both disturbing and surprisingly emotional, and the horror unfolds so gradually that you won’t even realize how deeply unsettling it is until the very end.
With a remarkable 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Fly features Jeff Goldblum as a scientist named Seth Brundle. He’s invented a teleportation device and decides to test it on himself. Unfortunately, a fly gets inside the machine during the process, causing his cells to combine with the insect’s. At first, the teleportation seems successful, but soon the fly’s cells begin to change his body, causing a horrifying and disgusting transformation. He slowly turns into a grotesque insect, and his girlfriend can only watch in horror as it happens.
The Fly is Body Horror at its Finest
The 1986 film continues to receive high praise from both critics and viewers. Its impressive practical effects, combined with David Cronenberg’s skillful direction and strong performances from Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, left little to fault. Many see the film as a powerful representation of chronic or terminal illness, with the gradual changes to the main character’s body and mind, and his powerlessness to stop them, remaining impactful after four decades. Sean Axmaker of Stream on Demand describes it as a “mind-warping drama” that feels intensely physical and horrifying because of its focus on the helplessness of watching a body deteriorate, portraying a process that’s both evolutionary and disease-driven. Eve Tushnet of Patheos agrees, noting the film’s convincing and emotionally honest portrayal of a difficult situation, making it surprisingly hard to watch.
Even general audiences are deeply moved by the film, finding it both frightening and emotionally powerful. One viewer described it as a heartbreaking, scientifically-driven love story with incredibly realistic practical effects – far more effective than modern CGI. They were particularly struck by the tragic arc of the lead scientist, brilliantly played by Jeff Goldblum, and how his character’s descent into a monster was devastating to watch.
Ultimately, The Fly remains a classic film, and it’s easily one of David Cronenberg’s best contributions to horror and science fiction. It’s disturbing, visually intense, and a must-see for any fan of the genre.
