As HBO prepares to launch its new Harry Potter series, one of the show’s main actors has addressed criticism for continuing to work on the project. Controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, known for her public statements about transgender rights, has cast a shadow over the show – similar to what happened with the release of Hogwarts Legacy – and cast members have been repeatedly asked about Rowling’s views. Now, John Lithgow has explained why he chose to participate despite the concerns.
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint were given the option to either support or criticize the author of the Harry Potter books. However, John Lithgow faces a different situation: he’s been asked to explain why he chose to participate in the new film knowing about the controversy surrounding the author and their connection to the franchise. He recently discussed this at the premiere of his new movie, Jimpa, telling Variety that he seriously considered not taking part.
Honestly, it really bothered me when people started pushing back against my involvement. But looking at the original ‘Harry Potter’ books, there’s absolutely no hint of anything transphobic. J.K. Rowling created a world that’s all about kindness and accepting everyone, and playing Dumbledore was such a wonderful opportunity. It wasn’t an easy choice, and it genuinely made me uncomfortable and sad that some people wanted me to step down. Ultimately, I decided I wasn’t going to let them push me into doing that.
John Lithgow Further Defends His Decision To Play Dumbledore

Lithgow did a commendable job portraying Dumbledore, echoing the feelings of many fans who still enjoy the series but disagree with J.K. Rowling’s views. He brought a thoughtful perspective to a complex discussion, and while reactions might not always be as measured, his insights are valuable.
I deeply respect the importance of this topic. She’s built a powerful and influential body of work for young audiences that has really captured the public’s imagination. At its heart, it’s a story of good versus evil, and compassion versus cruelty. However, I find her personal beliefs surprising and hard to understand. I haven’t personally met her, and she isn’t directly involved in this particular project, but the people working on it are truly exceptional.
According to Variety, a recent screening sparked controversy when a viewer walked out and began a lively debate. This feels like a preview of the reaction the upcoming Harry Potter release will receive. While the discussions might be difficult, they’re necessary for addressing issues of fairness and injustice. The cast members were fully aware of the potential for criticism when they took on this project, and it’s probable that this is just the first of many such debates – it’s far from over.
