Denzel Washington’s Best Movie of All Time Malcolm X Is Now Officially Streaming on HBO Max

The highly praised 1992 film starring Denzel Washington is now available on HBO Max. It joined the streaming service’s collection on February 1st.

The highly praised film Malcolm X is based on Malcolm X and Alex Haley’s autobiography of the same name. Denzel Washington delivers a powerful performance as the iconic civil rights leader, and the movie follows his life from childhood through his untimely death in 1965. He was assassinated while speaking at the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan.

The film Malcolm X features a strong ensemble cast, including Angela Bassett as Betty Shabazz, Al Freeman Jr. as Elijah Muhammad, Giancarlo Esposito as Talmade X Hayer, Delroy Lindo as West Indian Archie, Tommy Hollis as Earl Little, and Lonette McKee as Louise Little. The cast is completed by Kate Vernon, Theresa Randle, Albert Hall, Ernest Lee Thomas, Wendell Pierce, Jean-Claude La Marre, Roger Guenveur Smith, and Peter Boyle.

And the recognition it received was incredible; it racked up over two dozen nominations for major awards, including Oscars for Denzel Washington’s performance and the stunning costume design.

Currently, it has an 89% “Certified Fresh” rating and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. In 2010, the film was recognized as historically significant and added to the National Film Registry, ensuring its place in American film history.

What’s Next for Malcolm X Star Denzel Washington?

Denzel Washington is switching gears after working with Spike Lee on the upcoming film Highest to Lowest in 2025. This year, he’ll star in Here Comes the Flood, a crime thriller directed by Fernando Meirelles. Simon Kinberg wrote the screenplay and, along with Meirelles and Audrey Chon, also produced the movie, which follows a group of people caught up in a dangerous situation.

The upcoming film Here Comes the Flood features a talented cast including Robert Pattinson, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Danai Gurira, Sean Harris, Justin Kirk, and Moisés Arias. Filming finished on January 22nd, and while there isn’t a confirmed release date yet, many expect it to be available on Netflix before the end of 2026.

The actor is also expanding into the superhero genre. He’s confirmed to appear in a new film directed by Ryan Coogler. Currently believed to be called Shadows of Wakanda, production is scheduled to begin this summer.
