Tyla wants a man who can make her lose her breath—and more.
During the Grammy Awards on February 1st, 2026, the artist known as “Water” shared her criteria for a good relationship. (Check out photos of all the celebrities on the red carpet here.)
She told Zuri Hall during the Live From TopMob: Grammys broadcast from Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena that she enjoys being pampered and appreciates traditional courtesy. ‘I love a gentleman,’ she said.
She’s looking for a boyfriend who can be both sweet and a little bit edgy. As she explained, she likes a guy who is a gentleman but also has a rougher side—a good balance of both qualities.
Tyla, who won a Grammy for Best African Music Performance in 2024 with her single “Push 2 Start” before the show hosted by Trevor Noah, is prioritizing her music and confidently aiming for worldwide success.
“I’m loving it,” she said of her sky-rocketing career. “I feel like a pop star—literally a dream.”
Tyla says she’s feeling much better and more confident now than she did two years ago when her song “Water” first became popular.
She added of her journey to the spotlight, “I’m embracing it now.”
Still, the South Africa native considers herself to be somewhat of a homebody.
In a 2024 interview on the Miami on the Rocks podcast, she explained she’d prefer to date someone who loves playing video games constantly over someone who goes clubbing every weekend.
Tyla added, ‘It’s good to be relaxed and comfortable at home, and I really enjoy that. I’m not a big gamer, but I do like to play games sometimes.’
She added that a a chill sense of humor is a must.
She explained that while humor is good, excessive silliness can become annoying. She prefers humor that feels genuine and effortless, not forced or over-the-top—the kind that just comes naturally.

Honestly, hearing Tyla say “At least I know we’re chilling; we’re home” just melts me! It’s like she’s talking directly to us, you know? And she gets it – being cozy at home is the BEST. She’s not a huge gamer, which is fine, but she still enjoys playing games, and that’s all I need to know! It’s just…perfect. Everything about her is perfect.

She explained that while humor is good, it can become annoying if it’s overdone. She prefers humor that feels genuine and effortless, rather than forced or clownish – just natural moments of wit.
