Before creating the blockbuster hit Your Name, director Makoto Shinkai won over audiences with the sweet and emotional anime film 5 Centimeters Per Second in 2007. Sadly, viewers in North America will soon lose access to this beloved movie – it will be unavailable in less than a month.
The anime film 5 Centimeters Per Second became available on Netflix in September 2024, but it will only remain there until March 1, 2026. Currently, Netflix is the only streaming service in the United States where you can watch it.
The movie used to be on Crunchyroll, but it’s no longer available there. As of today, it doesn’t look like it will be added back after March 1st.
Makoto Shinkai’s Heartbreaking Masterpiece Is Leaving Netflix Next Month
5 Centimeters Per Second is Makoto Shinkai’s second full-length film. The story is told in three parts and focuses on Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara, who become close friends and develop feelings for each other as children. When Takaki’s family moves, he and Akari share a memorable night, realizing their lives are about to take different directions.
The rest of the series follows Takaki and Akari as they go to college and begin their adult lives. Throughout this time, Takaki deals with the lingering pain of losing the person he loved most.
The movie 5 Centimeters Per Second offers a touching and honest portrayal of love in the modern world. Though it wasn’t a huge commercial success, it received critical acclaim and awards, including Best Animated Feature at the 2007 Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Its popularity also inspired a manga version created by Yukiko Seike in 2010.
The popular anime film 5 Centimeters Per Second has been made into a live-action movie directed by Yoshiyuki Okayama. The screenplay was written by TV writer Fumiko Suzuki. Released in Japan on October 10, 2025, the film features Hokuto Matsumura and Mitsuki Takahata as the adult Takaki and Akari. Notably, Matsumura also voiced the character Souta Munakuta in another project.
Before the movie was released, Shinkai shared an official statement where he complimented the work. He said he found himself captivated by the visuals, and was surprised by how much he enjoyed it.
You’ll be able to watch 5 Centimeters Per Second on Netflix until March 1, 2026. Currently, a live-action version of the anime isn’t available on streaming services outside of Japan. Other films by director Makoto Shinkai, like Your Name, Weathering With You, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, and The Place Promised in Our Early Days, can be found on Max. And if you’re looking for Suzume, it’s streaming on both Netflix and Crunchyroll.
