Chris Evans is confirmed to reprise his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, but there were almost earlier opportunities to see him return. While the lead-up to Doomsday has been gradual, recent Marvel Cinematic Universe films have hinted at a major, universe-spanning conflict. We’ve seen setups for a climactic battle between realities (Captain America: Brave New World) and even met the villain aiming to control everything (Doctor Doom). Despite a Avengers: Doomsday teaser showing Steve embracing fatherhood, his role in the film’s overall dark story remains largely a mystery.
A new rumor suggests Marvel originally planned to use one of their movies to better establish the storyline for Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday, but they ultimately changed course. While this information should be treated as unconfirmed, it does make you wonder about Captain America’s role in Doomsday…
Fantastic Four: First Steps Allegedly Had A Steve Rogers Post-Credits Scene
The ending of The Fantastic Four: First Steps created a lot of excitement because it marked Robert Downey Jr.’s first appearance as Doctor Doom. In the scene, Doom appeared before Reed and Sue Richards’ son, Franklin, and seemed to want to control the boy’s ability to change reality. But according to Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic podcast, the movie was originally planned to have an even bigger surprise after the credits rolled.
Apparently, a scene originally planned for the end of the upcoming Fantastic Four movie featured the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom asking Captain America (Steve Rogers) to join them in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-616) to help build trust with other heroes. Though cut from the final version, this scene might still appear in the movie.
Over the past few months, rumors have been circulating about the plot of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. A recurring idea in these leaks is that the time travel Steve Rogers did at the end of Avengers: Endgame will be explained. Apparently, the directors of both Endgame and Doomsday, the Russo Brothers, intend to resolve this loose end. While specifics are still unknown, it seems Steve’s actions will be connected to the potential collapse of the multiverse – where different realities start crashing into each other. Many fans believe Doctor Doom will initially appear as a helpful figure, possibly a version of Tony Stark from another universe trying to protect his world and the multiverse. The theory suggests Doom will trick the MCU heroes, and that the biggest threat to survival will be the universe from the old Fox X-Men movies.
At first, the characters might not be enemies; they could even be allies. Sneider suggests that something Steve does creates a problem in their world, prompting them to work together. They initially come to help fix it, but Doctor Doom ultimately betrays them all.
A new report suggests a scene from the Fantastic Four: First Steps post-credits sequence might hint at what happens early in Avengers: Doomsday. The report claims Doctor Doom, after recruiting the Fantastic Four from another universe, is searching for Steve Rogers, viewing him as a unique threat across the multiverse. Doom seemingly manipulates Rogers into leading a rescue mission that Doom himself orchestrated. This makes sense because seeing Steve Rogers and a Tony Stark look-alike return to save Earth could motivate the MCU heroes to fight the X-Men, giving Doom the opportunity to carry out his true plan. The lack of a traditional post-credits scene in First Steps – instead offering a tease with Doom and Franklin, and a humorous animated sequence – supports this theory. It’s possible a clip from Doomsday was originally intended for the post-credits, but was swapped with the cartoon opening without anyone noticing.
It’s easy to see why that clip was cut. It would have revealed major plot points about Doomsday, shown Downey as Doctor Doom for the first time, and confirmed Evans’ return as Captain America. Releasing that much information in a post-credits scene for a movie that wasn’t a sure success was a risk Marvel wasn’t willing to take. This is clear now, as Marvel is heavily featuring both Evans and Downey in the marketing for Avengers: Doomsday. Evans’ teaser started the entire campaign, and Downey’s full appearance as Doom is being saved for a significant promotional event.
