EastEnders’ Balvinder Sopal teases “long” Suki and Eve Panesar-Unwin adoption storyline as couple’s pasts explored

Balvinder Sopal, who plays a character on EastEnders, has revealed that her current story on the show will continue for quite some time.

On the BBC One soap opera, Suki Panesar-Unwin is trying to adopt a child with her wife, Eve Panesar-Unwin. This comes after a difficult situation last year where Suki attempted to raise her teenage step-granddaughter Avani Nandra-Hart’s baby, and the couple now hope to start a family together.

Okay, so ‘Sukeve’ used to be a bit…questionable, let’s say. But they’ve cleaned up their act, and it looks like things are about to get really interesting – a real emotional rollercoaster, if you ask me. I’m definitely intrigued to see where this new, legitimate path takes them.

At the TopMob Covers Party 2026, Balvinder discussed the show’s plot and her long-standing working relationship with co-star Heather Peace.

Balvinder described his working relationship with Heather as fantastic. They’ve collaborated for about three years, and each time they work together, they discover new nuances that enrich the connection between their characters, Suki and Eve. He feels it’s important to keep the characters’ relationship dynamic and avoid it becoming predictable, and he believes introducing an adoption storyline is a great way to add complexity and depth.

Sopal explained that viewers can look forward to a detailed storyline over the coming months, exploring the backgrounds and lives of the characters involved in the adoption process. The show aims to portray the realities of adoption honestly, acknowledging it’s a challenging journey. The EastEnders team has thoroughly researched the topic to ensure an authentic and compelling story.

Since we don’t know much about Suki’s childhood or family, is this a chance to learn more about how she grew up?

Okay, so I’ve got a little intel, and while I can’t spill everything just yet, it sounds like we’re going to be getting some serious backstory on these characters. And honestly, it’s about time! We’re starting to think about their futures, and how they’ll handle parenthood, which naturally leads us to question their upbringing. Everyone’s already decided Suki’s a bit of a flawed mother, and, yeah, she is! (laughs) But what’s really interesting is the possibility of finally understanding why she is the way she is. It’s going to be great to see them delve into that, potentially.

We’ve always experienced Suki’s story through other characters – like Nish, her kids, Eve, and even Ayesha, the neighbor. It’s good to finally show her perspective and introduce other sides of her, and who knows what else we might discover?

Suki flashback episode, anyone?
