I’ve been noticing some exciting transformations unfolding at Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine this summer. They seem to be on the hunt for their next big success, and it appears they might have found a contender with one of the most captivating debuts the magazine has seen. Previously, they announced four new series would be introduced in June, which also led to the cancellation of several existing series to make way for these fresh stories. Although this news may disappoint fans of the canceled works, it opens up a chance for new, innovative narratives to come to light.
This week, Jun Harukawa introduced their latest creation, “Kaedegami,” in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The series blends Chinese mythology, intriguing demon designs, and an enigmatic central plot. It’s difficult to predict the direction of the story following its first chapter, but with such a powerful start, it seems that this series could have a promising future with the magazine due to the intriguing setup for its main characters.
What Is Kaedegami?
Kaedegami is a story that unfolds in the Eastern Frontier, where creatures known as Shenguai roam freely. These monstrous beings are infamous for kidnapping and devouring humans. The narrative centers around a resilient boy named Kou, who was left by his father at an early age and has since lived independently in the wilderness. Unbeknownst to others, Kou shares his existence with one of these Shenguai – a creature he calls Chiyou. After being abandoned, Chiyou found Kou and took him under her wing, teaching him survival skills. Over time, they formed an unusual bond and began co-existing peacefully.
However, as the Shenguai assaulted both of them, Kou realized Chiyou’s true motive. It turned out that she had nurtured him from childhood to serve as a container for her power and was intent on regaining her lost identity. Once known as the War God among the Shenguai, she had been deprived of a significant portion of her body parts and powers. She had lost her face, innards, and limbs. Her plan was to wait until Kou grew strong enough to assume control.
How to Read Kaedegami
Due to the connection they’ve nurtured and the moments they’ve experienced together, Chiyou no longer desires to exploit Kou as a container for his spirit. However, in light of their predicament, Kou is prepared to allow Chiyou to use him as a conduit for battle. With their combined strength, they are able to fend off the Shenguai attack and even restore Chiyou’s facial features. This marks the initial phase in what appears to be a challenging odyssey aimed at recovering her scattered fragments and restoring her power. The success of this endeavor remains uncertain as it faces the stiff competition within the Shonen Jump arena.
To keep up with the latest releases of the manga “Kaedegami” from Japan, you can access all the newest chapters free of charge through Shueisha’s MangaPlus service or Viz Media’s digital Shonen Jump library. As we follow this series, we’ll soon discover whether it will become another title that didn’t get a fair chance at success, or if it will enjoy a long-term run like popular franchises such as “My Hero Academia”. At this point, it’s definitely one of the more captivating new releases.
